  • Oh no

Looks like more speed humps are on the way to our area. Just had a leaflet through the letter box about a council meeting for consultation over traffic plans in our area.
This basically means they'll tell us what they're going to do listen to us ignore us and then go ahead anyway.
Of course they may say they're going to take the speed humps out but I think not. looks like this council won't be getting my vote next time around.

Oh No, we've just go trafic calming and a 20 mile speed limit signs that are just been placed on the only access road to our estate.

Its going to be a nightmare

I may sound harsh but this is for kids who have never been taught road safety (I had the green cross code in my day) and think that they have right of way over a car on a public highway.

The kids of today should be taught a little about road use as it will be them who are the drivers in a fews years.

Erm, redhed you may have to visit your local magistrate to explain that one.

Yes how to upset the modern parent. I was taught not to play on roads. Thats really gets their backup.
I wish the council would do more about dangerous/idle parking as the traffic round area isn't too bad. However we now got people parking across junctions and on pavements. So if you've got a pram you've got to go down the road and if you're trying to get out of a junction you've got to edge a long way out.

They way I see it there are at least three things you can do, and they rarely take number 3.
I am 33 and I also had the green-cross-code. It still didn't stop kids getting killed though

            1. Install speed humps - this causes accelleration/decelleration all along the road, and prematurely knackers your suspension, even when taking at modest speeds.

            2. Build kerbs out at random intervals narrowing the road to one lane causing you to stop and give way, or hope the other guy will obey the priority signs. This causes major queues in my area and is thoroughly detested (and in my opinion dangerous).

            3. Introduce a 20 (or even a 15) mph limit in residential areas. Sure some will still speed, but it will bring the average speed down.

Some other ways of slowing down traffic are currently more and more applied here in Belgium.

              1. The road is made more narrow, and a red "bicycle-suggestion lane" is on each side. The roads are now too narrow for two cars to pass each other without one (or both cars) using the "bicycle suggestion lane" (which is a allowed, it is just a suggestion lane ! ). The cyclists however get an idea of safety as they are on such a lane. It is just plain dangerous !

              2. Small poles on the side of the road (esp. in touristic centres), making it virtually impossible to either overtake a cyclist (narrow lanes) or make way for priority vehicles (police, medical services, ..).

I do believe there was a trial in Holland with a different way of slowing down traffic : the tarmac is laid out alternatively leaning towards the left and towards the right. At 40-50 kph, one doesn't notice this, but at 60-70 the car just wobbles uncomfortable from left to right. But the trial was unsuccessfull : everybody wanted to drive on that particular piece of road and it became jammed, eliminating the need for traffic-slowdown techniques.

And I bet it's the god damn parents doing it.

I like villagers who grumble about speeding. Anyway TV interviewed one of the traffic pigs, sorry cops and he laugthed and said the problem is mainly local people who moan like f*** but drive like hell through other villages.
