Assuming gun laws depreciate access to guns by those who would mis-use them is both naieve and stupid.

Germany has some of the toughest gun laws in the world, but that didn't stop the killings there. The same goes for Britain, but yet they had the pre-school shootings a few years ago.

Time after time it has been shown that those who perpetrate these crimes obtain their weapons EXTRA-legally. In Columbine it was an a person purchasing firearms for another, which has been illegal for decades.

Even Sarah Brady, the rampant anti-gun activist, has come afoul of this law by purchasing a hunting rifle as a Christmas present for her son. So much for consistancy between public opinion and personal actions....

    Uppance: gun laws do nothing save for;

    1. making gun-runners rich

    2. making it impossible to protect yourself & your family from those who will violate any law you pass

    3. making what a reasonable person would consider innocent acts into criminal activity

#2 is particularly important since any honest law enforcement officer will tell you, and court decisions here confirm, that the job of the police is NOT to protect citizens but to capture the perpetrators after the fact.

These court decisions came down when citizens sued the police department for failure to protect when threats were made, the police notified and the threat was carried out in the absence of the police providing active protection.

Because of this and other irrationalities all but a few States in the USA now have concealed carry laws permitting citizens without criminal or psychiatric histories to carry a weapon for self-defence.

A lot of the move to concealed carry laws started when Florida passed theirs after a run of violent particularly violent crimes against both US citizens and European tourists, most notably the murder of a German vacationer who was killed during a mugging.

A funny thing happened after Florida passed this law: VIOLENT CRIME DROPPED LIKE A ROCK.

Strange how the prospect of some little old lady sticking the barrel of a .357 Magnum up your nose calms ones urge to mug people

To be a little pedantic, our gun laws came into effect after the Dunblaine shootings.
Although anyone with half a brain said at the time that this was an isolated incident, and 99% of gun crime was with stolen or illegally imported firearms rather than using legitimately owned and licensed guns, the politicians had to do something (to make sure they got a few votes) and banned everything bigger than a .22 single shot pistol.
Guess what? We now have problems with gun crime perpetrated by, shock horror gasp, criminals using stolen, illegally imported or even illegally converted guns.

I think before the UK Gun control laws, the chances of being burgled by a gun armed criminal were slim, and the chances of said criminal being confronted by a householder with a gun even slimmer.

The very few times its happened, such as the Tony Martin case, the Police & Courts have been more concerned with prosecuting the evil, gun toting victim rather than the innocent burglar.

(NB to recap for those unaware, the Tony Martin case was of a country farmer who's property had been burgled several times in recent months and who's local village had no Police presence. A pair of burglars attempted to rob him one night and he fired off his 12-bore into the darkness, inadvertantly killing a poor, misled lad with a heart of gold and 23 previous convictions.
Tony Martin is now in jail for manslaughter. His victims family are suing him and everyone else they can think of. The victims accomplice, who also had a rap sheet as long as a Matrox lead time, served a couple of years and is out on parole.
There is still no police presence in Tony Martins home village.

Then you need to look more closely at the facts. Most of the large attacks, like the one that happen in Germany, are planned out againist people they know can not defend themselves and when finally confronted with someone who can 9 times out of 10 they end up turning the gun on themselves. Ask yourself this question, why don't we hear about shoting rampages going on in police stations?? Because they can shot back.

And gun control laws do nothing to stop suicide bombers. Hell Timothy Mcvay killed 161 people and never fired a single shot. 241 American soldiers died in their barracks without a single gun shot being fired. 15(?) American naval personal were killed while their ship was in port getting refueled without a single gunshot being fired. And the number of so called "impluse" shootings are very low indeed. Even in some of those case the person left went and got a gun and came back which shows thought was involved and if a Gun was not avaiable more than likely something else would have been used.

Now maybe we could have the type of utopia that you would like to see if guns had never been invented but there is no way gun control laws will ever achieve that. All that most gun control laws do is leaves a group who obeys the law defensless againist a group who don't obey the law, even gun control laws.

Here's a couple of thoughs for you. If they seem silly they are suppose to be to get a point across.
If guns cause crime, then pencils cause misspelled words.
If Guns cause Crime, then Matches cause Arson.
