If you have enough names for both sexes... why not wait?

I myself had trouble finding a name for our girl - her mother'd say "this one", I: "nooo...", she: "that one", I: "nope..."

A name for a boy AND a girl would have been nearly impossible- thank GOD we didn't get twins

We were really superstitious this time around and bought nothing until after the baby arrived, she was fine in some of her brothers more neutral things until we had a chance to get to the shops, I don't think she's been too psychologically traumatised by it. I voted no, because for us it didn't work out, as the sonographer wasn't certain, so we told our son we didn't know whether he was having a brother or sister. He changed his mind on a weekly basis as to which one he wanted. Then a class-mate told him if you wished for one you got the other and things got really confusing!

Actually its colour codeing for people that want to look at your baby in the street and old relatives that have bad memories.
Baby wearing blue - 90% chance its a boy - so say "what a cute boy"
Baby wearing pink - 90% chance its a girl - so say "what a cute girl"

Baby wearing yellow - just say "what a cute baby"

Colour coding seems to work, when Charlotte (now 7 months) is in girly colours people say, what a beautiful girl, when in neutral colours it's what a beautiful baby, is it a boy or a girl? Biased or not I may be, but when I look at her it's obvious she's a girl.

*shrug* actually at the turn of the LAST century (1900), baby boys wore pink/red because it was a "BOLDER" color, baby girls wore blue because it was a "softer" color.

How it got reversed is a long long convoluted tale.

from www.dearanswerlady.com:Why do boy babies get dressed in blue, and girls in pink?

Long ago, many people believed that evil spirits hung around the nursery, but that these spirits were repelled by certain colours. The most potent colour was blue, associated with the heavenly sky.

Blue was believed to frighten away demons and rob them of their power. So blue on a baby was not only adornment, but also seen as a very necessary precaution.

Now this was a long time ago, when girls were considered inferior, so boys got the really potent blue colour—it didn't matter what colour girls got. The assumption is that later generations chose pink for girls to symbolize that new rosy all-over-pink look.

                            OK, so now we know.

I had just about changed my mind (both on finding out and my preference), but we stuck to the decision.
