  • Ughh There is a snake in my pond

    Help,

There is a snake about 2ft long in my pond. It is green with a slightly lighter shading on the top.

I knew there was something wrong when all of the frogs legged it, even the carp is trying to jump out.

I'm not to hot on british snakes, but should they spook everything in my garden pond.

And the most important question - Is it safe?

Well you have a choice between a harmless grass snake or a poisonous adder. If it has sort of diamond markings on it's back it's an adder although I think they are more a sort of grey colour and their ramge is pretty limited to the South of England. Sounds more like a grass snake if it is native, of course it could have escaped from captivity and therefore could be anything

I think it may be a grass snake, the guy next door is turning over all of his grass and It may have seeked refuge in my pond.
Still not going near it though,

A very easy way to tell the two species apart. Go over to it and annoy the hell out of it. If it rolls over, plays dead and emits a foul stench it is a grass snake. If it turns round and bites you and that hurts like hell it is an adder. Quite simple really.

Of course if it is an escaped green mamba it will turn round and bite you and you will be dead within 10 minutes.

Adders are less green if anything:

Sounds like you have an escapee...

Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

It wasn't one of those. Unless it was a baby its body was much thinner than either the adder or the grass snake.
I'll have to get my wife to have a look when she gets home from work, if its still in the pond.

Maybe my eyes were deceving me about the colour. It is is one it can't half move it in water.

Adders hate water and will not enter it unless you trow them in it!
Grass snakes have 2 yellow "dots" (cirkles) on their head!

EDIT: Adders also swin with their head abowe water, and 90% of them have zigzag markings!
