  • Should they re-make War of the Worlds?

Tom Cruises production company has announced a remake of the 50's Sci-Fi movie "War of the Worlds", based on H. G. Well's classic story.

IMHO they should re-make it but following the novel, using a British cast and as a period piece; taking place in Britain at the turn of the century as originally written.

    Please opine....

I really think that now is the wrong time to try to make that movie. The original broadcast caused quite an uproar, and the old movie wasn't that bad. The (80's?) TV show was so-so.

I really don't think Hollywood could take this on without being overly patriotic and manipulative. They're likely to go for xenophobia in a big way, extra-terrestrial or otherwise.

I thought they did remake War of the Worlds. They just changed the name to Independence Day.

The problem is, even if they try to stay even remotely faithful to the novel, they'll put some lame contemporary spin on it like they did the recent version of The Time Machine.

Independence Day was a very lame ripoff of WotW. That had to be the most over-produced movie I've ever seen.

The 80's show at least tried to continue with the original movies intent, even to the point of the lead being the son of the movies protagonists. Still, it fell into some pretty silly moments.

Nope....I'd still like a faithful rendition of the novel without the BS Wombat is referring to.

Especially if HE decides to do the lead in an over-produced rehash of the Americanized version. No thanks.

The 50's film was somewhat laughable, as I remember. Typical naivete of the era.. especially where they stand there and let nuclear fallout plaster them, watching to see if the nuke has killed the Martians.

I must admit I haven't read the original novel, but that was in part due to the fact that after seeing the film, I was profoundly disinterested.

Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

WotW really only works in the novels time frame....
And the novel in itself are not posible to apply to "our" time....

I read the book, had the record and saw the film. The record versionwas pretty faithfull to the book (if you ignore david essex singing that is). Tom Cruise in the lead role... no I dont think so. Best to leave it as it is unless they canfollow the book (get rid of the singing though)..
