I don't know that Lucas ever had a magic touch. I like Eps 4-6 lots, but I don't know how much of it was him and how much of it was help that he had. He did American Graffiti, Episodes 4-6, and then... Episodes 1, 2, and (whenver the hurting stops).

I still have a grudge against him for the Ewoks. I understand the original plan was for the moon to be inhabited by Wookies. That would have been much better. But, you can't sell many Wookie toys to children, so Lucas made them more marketable.

thats holywood for you ... take a great movie and flog it till it cant drop any more coins at the box office.... what a shame .... i bet that if one day Mtrox comes out with a way to view content holographicly that GL will (instead of creating something totaly new) simply realeas a special special special edition of all the originals in that format...... film is like art, i dont see special editions of picaso's paintings.....

The original movies were immensely popular. You never heard the kind of criticisms you do with episodes I and II.
Part of that is because people were not as cynical and critical back in the 70's than they are today. Plus we were all alot younger then and it took alot less to entertain us.

What am I saying? Reading back through the posts in this thread it seems that a good set of boobs will do it.

              Enough Whining About GL...

I'm just glad a company like Intel didn't just release their first processor and say "Hey, it's pretty good. Let's not mess with it anymore".

I'm happy game developers make patches and updates after their game's initial release.

I prefer music artists that perform their hits differently when doing it "live" each time, instead of "lip synching" the recorded version.

I have no problems with Lucas trying to improve on a piece of work he has passion for. It's his and he has that right. If you don't like it, you do have to watch it....

                  Those are pretty bad analogies.

                  1. Releasing new processors is more like releasing new movies, not revising your old ones.

                  2. Patches: You don't have to install them, and it's a good thing. I remember some Quake patches that really sucked, and everybody went back to the old version. You're not forced to upgrade, and I bet a lot of people would be pissed off if you were.

                  3. Live performance: That's the beauty of live performance, and doesn't really relate to fixed media like movies.

A better analogy would be: What if Warhol or VanGogh showed up at the museum one day with a paint brush and some paint, and started "revising" their work? No matter how much you value their previous contributions, you probably wouldn't want them to edit what they'd already done -- especially if they are like GL and their recent work is pretty shitty compared to what they did 20 years ago.

yeah.. but with the movies.. you can always get ahold of the older non revised ones.. with paintings you cannot

                    • You can't with the movies either. I didn't like most of the changes to Ep 4-6, but the only choice seems to be old VHS (if you can find it) or (under our stupid laws) illegal transfers of LaserDisc. They won't be shown in theaters anymore, and they won't be on the DVDs.

                        • Oh, the technology is there. It's just not going to happen. GL said he wasn't going to release them.

                            • The original movies weren't meant to be on DVD. That's almost like colorizing black and white movies...

... I know, another bad analogy. But I haven't had my second cup of coffee yet this morning...
