GameCube, opinions of

The gamecube has only just been released in australia,

But I am considering buying it.

Why:

1) Price of console: $311 AU (about $175US). This is an excellent starting price for a new console, far cheaper than both the X-box($388 AU) and the PS2 ($480 AU)
2) Price of accessories: Memory cards are $35 AU (compared to $70 AU for PS 2 memory cards), games are priced at a reasonable price (as much as PS2 games, but cheaper than N64 games)
3) Reasonable game selection: Pikmen looks interesting, and there seems to be a few other good games out there for it, but this is the thing I worry about in the future.

Anyway, I was just interested in the forums opinions on whether this would be a good system to buy or not?

dropped to $150 US now.. i'm buying one cos the one i was playing at xmas got taken back to england with my bestfriend but yeah i was a bigtime ps2 person but i like the gamecube ALOT now.. i like the controllers too.. the old nintendo controllers in my opinion SUCKED before! but let me say this.. SSX on gamecube.. was fab!!! still havent gotten it for my birthday tho. lol

I was waiting for the PS2 to become cheaper as well, I just can't justify memory cards that cost $70 each!

I got to play with the controllers about a week ago. They seem to combine the nice PS analog control with a nice button layout. Another big plus is that the controller doesn't have TOO many buttons on it

They are a lot better than the N64 controllers, which felt slightly unnatural and quite fragile (the analog control on the N64 controllers was very, ummm, poorly built)

Well, my take on the GameCube is this - so long as you aren't looking for some of the OTHER capabilities that the PS2 and/or XBox offer - DVD playback, etc. - then you're fine going with it.

I wanted one for Christmas, but I was faced with the fact that at the time, there just weren't very many good games for it. Even now, there are precious few that I want to play.

This will, I imagine, change. Mario and Zelda are within spitting distance, as well as a couple good RPG's.

Plus, it's TINY and CHEAP.

Cood care less about DVD playback. Thats what a good DVD player is for. They have remotes and tend to do a nicer job

I buy consoles to PLAY GAMES on my old amiga screen , since I am not allowed to hog the TV all the time.

I also like the tiny bit. I am not interested in a console I could beat someone to death with (Xbox), I have plenty of computer equipment to do that with

Yeah, the GameCube has the most promise - plus Nintendo tends to make systems with a heavy shelf life and games that are very replayable - UNLIKE Sony, where you tend to beat most games and then forget them forever.

Could be me, but..

Nintendo makes the best controllers out there.
Starting off with the NES-controllers, which were good to handle, despite of their rectangle form.
SNES-controllers were a bit tiny, but still very good, and all the buttons at the right place.
N64-controllers... Rugger; I don't see your point here. I liked the analog stick from day one. It's light and reacts good to your moves.
GC-controllers are the logical step after the N64-controllers. Just the right weight and size, and they play like any other Nintendo-controller.

The controllers provided by Sega, Sony and Microsoft are too heavy, too light, have too many buttons at the wrong places or just suck.
With a Nintendo-controller, you can play for hours and nothing happens to you. When I played the X-box and the PS2, I had to pause every fifteen minutes because of the sucky weight and lack thereof. That's not helping if you're in a DoA3-competition and trying to beat the pants off of all your competitors. Because the latter part becomes very difficult when you hands are cramped.

I never had a problem with PS2 controllers.

The analog controllers on them are quite durable and nice to use. I never had the problem with it cramping my hands or anything. The only problem with I had was that the PSone (not the black PS2, but the white PSone) digital directional buttons hurt my thumbs after a while, which I fixed by using a newer PS2 controller, that has nicer digital directional buttons. I also like the inbuilt dual-shock PS2 controllers have.

The N64 analog controller, while not being terrible, was definitely a lot more fragile and succeptable to wear and tear. It doesn't seem to be any lighter than the PS2 analog controller though. I also found holding it not to be quite as comfortable as the playstation controllers but I never had any comfort problems with it either. It's not that the N64 controller was bad, I just didn't like it as much as the PS2 controller.

The gamecube's analog controller is much closer in design and feel to the playstation analog controllers than the old N64 analog controller. In fact, the gamecube's controller is very close in design to playstation controller, while making some nice improvements on it, which I think is an excellent move by nintendo.

It seems that despite its late entrance into the market, Nintendo with its gamecube is really going to do quite well.

Wow, I thought I was the only one that still used an old amiga screen. I use mine every day as a tv, only every once in awhile anymore for consoles.

Ah, ours is an old phillips equivilant thingy. It was donated it me after it was donated to work with an Amiga 500 a year or so ago, the rest of which had to be junked. (Amazing what people actually donate to schools.)

We have enough TV's here, so it is basicly used as a console display

/me is quite happy playing SoulCalibur on his Dreamcast for

(which was sold for just 60 Euro at "Toys Are Us" in Portugal two weeks ago)

Actually, SoulCalibur is the only game I play lately (against very frustrated friends ) though I have a few othres like Shenmu, Crazy Taxi 2, Dead or Alive 2 and Jet set radio. That's till I get a few other games (Capcom vs. SNK, Ultimate fighting, Loony Toons race and a few others)

SoulCalibur 2 should come out sometime soon for PS2 and a little later for the GameCube - which is a very good reason for gettng a GameCube (I hate the PS2 controllers, unless you get an arcade stick like I have for my DC:smile

i agree with Gurm, i had about 30 playstation games sittin on my shelf that i didnt play anymore. but i noticed this winter i kept wanting to play those games over and over again......

and the PS2 doesnt have that many more features then the GC does it? just the shitty dvd option. and i mean shitty yes
