Thanx Lizzie for reminding me of the Darwin Awards

Its about 11 pages long, so in short, it goes something like this :
Mojave desert, 1978, a young guy was working on his fathers scrapyard where they used to get stuff from Government acutions. Every now and again theyd turn up something amongst the scrap like a belt of M60 ammo which they had to give back.
Then one day they find some JATO bottles and had the whacky idea of makign a rocket car.
Except these guys are a bit smarter than the Darwin Award candidates and decide to use an old mine car bucket as chassis running on a bit of mine railway running out of an abandonded mine.
On top of this bucket they bolt the body off a 1959 Impala (from the scrapyard), and wired a remote igniter and a rudimentry remote brake involving a large railway sleeper.
The fun started when they rolled the car off their flatbed and realised it was facing into the mine rather than out of it.
So, they rolled the car back along the tracks as far as they could, lit the blue touch paper and watched it go.
The remote brakes failed to slow it down enough but did make it come off the track and hit the side of the mine entrance at considerable speed. The entrance collapsed and buried the front end of the car.
The builders got there, realised they had no hope of getting the thing out of the rubble, but that the end of a JATO rocket was sticking pretty obviously out of the mess.
So they panicked, jumped in their truck and drove off, leaving a nice set of wheelspin marks along the road heading off away from the mine.

Our car wasn't a 1967 Chevy Impala, but a 1959 Chevy Impala. A bone-white Impala, with a red interior. I know how bizarre that sounds, but once a story starts to mutate into a legend, there's no telling which parts of the truth will stick. Obviously the Chevy Impala part made the cut.
Here's the first image Google found when I entered "1959 Impala".. bone white, with red interior! Slick ride, eh?
I don't care if the 11 page story was real or not:
It was funny as h*** to read

I think if you all like this kind of accidents, you should read "Darwin's blade" from Dan Simmons ((c) 2000).
It's also available under the title "Das Schlangenhaupt" here in Germany.
I've read it 4 month ago, and there are a couple of really interesting accidents.
Couldn't stop laughing when I read the book.
Maybe to much black humor. )
As always it is quite good investigated by Dan Simmons! All smaller stories in that book are true, except for the main story.

We know humans are enough stupid to do such a thing, so it could be a real fact...
But, think about a JATO applied to a C-130 for applyng a boost.
Now, imagine the same amount of strenght applied to a car...a flying car?
Naaaaahhh...the result is a flyng Jato, and an on-place destroyed car
This gets me to speculate on the batmobile built for the first movie (1988...)
They claimed that it was a real and working Jet engine on that car...
I wonder if it really worked ;-)
