The fires are nothing. If/when Yellowstone decides to erupt you guys will be under about 30 meters of ash

Yellowstone is a supervolcano and its starting to bulge.

Or that island in the canary isles is going to collasp and drown you all with the tidal wave. But it will put the fire out.

How far are the fires from Colorado Springs? I have a cousin that moved down there with her husband. Not being American, I'm not sure of the layout of Colorado.

Hope all turns out well Ken. Maybe you should suggest to your parents not to go out on the lake anymore. Seems like a slightly bad track record.

Colorado Springs is in no danger, it is farther to the South.
In this picture, Denver is on the map to the northeast. Sis and Uncle are between Pine and Conifer, Dad is slightly North of Conifer, closer to Evergreen.

What's the population like in all those towns around the fire?

Just wait for a big undersea landslide/avalanche off Hawaii... some of the islands there have coral deposits 1000 feet above the current sea level that were left by a tsunami that they think was caused an rather large landslide in, and/or into the ocean from Hawaii.

I believe they expect a piece of the big island about 2 miles deep and 50 miles long to slide into the sea when it goes. The Tsunami will head straight for Califlakey.

Yea...one of the reasons I like living in Colorado is that we should be safe from most major global events due to our position and altitude. The Hawaii slide, arctic meltdown, Cali falling into the ocean when the BIG quake comes...these should only increase our land values here, and we'll be much closer to the coast.
Seems a fair trade off for the occasional wild fire and tornado

Higher elevation : less mass boiled off a big meteorite as it falls in your vicinity. Plus, you've got plenty of resurgent calderas that are close enough to your west to give ya a dusting you wouldn't soon forget (if didn't die right away from the tons of volcanic ash and other yucky stuff that is.) Not that anyone would escape the effect from one of those... they're belived to do a good job at causing "nuclear winters".

Well, they found out who started the fire.
It was a Forestry Service worker who was patrolling the park for fires! Seems her story wasn't adding up, and upon re-interviewing her, she confessed.

Apparently she got pissed about a letter from her estranged husband, and decided to burn it.
                          Nice job, lady!

She is now facing up to 10 years in jail and as much as $250,000 in fines...and the feds may have more charges coming her way when the state is done with her.

The fire is still going (as well as several smaller ones across the state). There are now over 1800 fire fighters on it, claiming about 45% containment.

Family is all back in town. Only uncle's place was on a standby evac. warning, which fortunatly never came for him...

Fires are good for the land...not so good for the people's homes...but necessary for the maint. of the land nonetheless.
