Oasis? You mean the pretentious whiner who can't sing and think's he's the reincarnation of John Lennon? He makes me wanna puke..

The members of the RIAA have been fried by too many drugs and don't know what good music is anymore, they sign shit artists and then wonder why music sales are down? It's not just because of MP3s.

The only whining wussies I really like listening to are Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins.. because they are the ones who started it, and they actually do good music and can actually sing.

The fact that you refer to someone who plays a guitar which has been "tuned way-up and tossed down a flight of stairs" (wtf is being "tuned way up"? I mean, I've only played guitar for 15 years... so I'm not up with all the "lingo" of alternative musicians) as MUSIC is indicative of the problem with our society.

Hayden may or may not be good art. Sonic Youth, another "band" confused with music by many, may or may not be good art. But it ain't MUSIC unless it uses NOTES and CHORDS. It can be performance art, or audible art (sonic art), but it cannot be MUSIC.

Rap, for example, was never MUSIC. When they added music, it became hip-hop.

The fact that you enjoy listening to something does not make it music.

You can call me a grouch if you like, but technically I'm right.

      - Gurm

P.S. I never said that you said that. But it IS the reason you like his "music". It wasn't good. It wasn't good at ALL. It was destined to fade into obscurity like every other drug-fueled bad with bad mixing and that irritating squealy-noise over the top that was so popular that year. But he died. That caused the music-buying-and-criticizing public, 99% of whom are brain-dead simps, to say "he must have been tortured!", which leads other members of other groups of idiots to make the tortured=talented connection (not a true connection, but commonplace nonetheless), which in turn leads everyone who likes indie-rock to listen to it endlessly, which in turn leads YOU to like it. Sorry, it's just the way things like this work. The only way that shitty bands keep going and getting major record label contracts is that society assumes that they are brilliant because they suck so bad.

        You're not alone.

I grew up when we had some real writers and musicians around, not the garbage so in vogue these days. Start with the Swing and Jazz greats and work your way up to pre-'65 rock & roll then skip to the better bands of the '70's and '80's.

Most of the stuff since about the mid '80's barely passes for music IMHO. Most of it couldn't stand up to the better neighborhood garage bands I've seen.

Okay Liz, here we go with a bit of crazyness:
          1) Mike Oldfield, albums: Voyager, Song Of Distant Earth
          2) System of a Down (the album Toxicity is the most famous)
          3) Litfiba prior to year 1999
          4) Vasco Rossi
          5) Frank Sinatra

          Ah, and obviously...Bjork
Sat on a pile of deads, I enjoy my oysters.

            Drizzt,

You know, I enjoyed System of a Down's albums. Then I saw them live at Ozzfest (just last week, actually!) and now I just can't listen to them any more. They sucked so hard live that I just don't know what to say about it.

Gurm, the reason I like Sublime is because I think they have good music. Period. I like the sound they have. But hey, you know more about the reasons why I like music then I myself know since you know so much about it.

You have a lot of nerve my friend. I don't care if you've played guitar for 100 years. I've interviewed many bands in person and learned A LOT from them (Weezer, Sum 41, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green....). Until you become a professional musician and sell records like Oasis and Sublime have, you're opinion doesn't have much weight to it and I wouldn't be spouting off like you have about this subject. I respect your opinion, but you telling me the reason I listen to Sublime is because of drugs is the dumbest thing I've heard you say yet. I listened to them before I even knew what drugs were (when I was 15) and didn't understand much about their lyrics. I liked the music, and that's it.

                    Lizzie:

Haven't listened to any of the bands you listed, to be honest. Although the chick with the voice sounds interesting.

                    Who is Gomez?

                    Buddman:

It isn't good music. Period. Moaning covers of Beatles tunes combined with whining odes to sexually abused and suicidal girls, and horrifying degenerations of perfectly good reggae isn't good.

And just because I haven't sold albums (and who amongst the myriad of professional and respected music critics HAS? How many movie critics make $100m movies?) doesn't mean I don't have a valid opinion and thorough understanding of the medium, does it?

You're just upset because I'm picking on YOUR chosen bit of eccentricity.

And who says you have to have the slightest ounce of musical talent to sell albums? You're very confused. You equate "sells albums and has a record contract" with "talented and capable musician". It just ain't so. Have you watched TV recently? They're GIVING AWAY record contracts and concert tours to the person that is voted on by ABC's viewers. And judging by the LAST publicity stunt of this kind (Eden's Crush, anyone?) that person will, in fact, have a couple of albums and a pretty decent tour or two. Are you going to tell me that one of those schmucks on "American Pop Star" or whatever it's called has some kind of CREDIBILITY with regards to the state of music today? Are you high on crack?

How about the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync? They don't write their own music, they don't play any instruments. They sell albums like crazy because they're pretty. Some of them can't sing, or at least couldn't before serious coaching. I respect their dedication, and they bust their asses on stage, but they got lucky didn't they? Do you think that THEY have credibility?

And to say that something is GOOD MUSIC because you liked it when you were 15 is absurd. Most 15 year olds listen to whatever they're handed. The CRAP my friends and I listened to when we were 15 was appalling. I'm not under any illusion about Black Flag or Mortification or Carcass or Napalm Death being amazing musicians, despite the fact that once in a while I slip one of those albums in and find myself enjoying it.

And I'm not picking on YOU personally. I reread my post, and it sure does look like it, huh? It was INTENDED as more of a commentary on why people like shitty bands. If you personally derive emotional satisfaction and/or enjoyment from Sublime, more power to ya. That doesn't change the fact that the legacy they left the world was two (bad) covers and a few bits of deranged moaning.

To say I have a lot of nerve to spout off my opinions is just silly. Has Roger Ebert ever made a movie? No. But he sure can rip 'em to shreds. I usually at least respect his opinion on the matter (except for his review of the Lord of the Rings, in which he compares the movie to a 30-year-old faulty memory of the book, but that's somewhat understandable). Does the fact that none of us know how to design a GPU keep us from critiqueing Matrox's astonishing incompetence at doing so?

I'm not going to back off on this, but yeah I was really hypercritical back there. Cope.

Gurm, all I am saying is you are WRONG for telling me the reasons I listen to their music. I listen to Sublime because I like their music, not because of the lead singer dying or because of drugs. I'm not upset because you don't like them. That's fine by me. I'm upset because you are telling me why I like a certain piece of music when you know nothing about me at all. Again, the reason I like Sublime is the music. PERIOD.

P.S. Just because you don't think it's good music doesn't make it a fact that it's bad music. Much of Tool and Radiohead have a lot of music based on drugs. Hell, even Weezer has a song about smoking weed.

Well, mainly because Lizzie has asked for something "new".
Else I'd have suggested Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Queen, Carlos Santana, Pink Floyd, Phil Collins, Sting, Pink Floyd, Simon & Garfunkel, Pink Floyd and so on...

its been hard for me to turn a lot of people onto them because they arent top 40. so if you do want to check them out try and get some songs. i'd like to know what your opinion of them would be. and also.. their latest album.. the music is a bit diff, so if you do want to check them out, get old and new songs.
