I believe that one of the main members of the band left before the newest album, "100 Days Off". Not sure but it might have been Karl Hyde, the vocalist. It certainly doesn't sound like him doing the vocals on the new album.

Ok, I'll toss a few artists and albums into the mix:

Aarktica (a classic 'shoegazer' band) - "Or you Could Just Go Through"

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead ("noise") - Source Tags and Codes"

Baden Powell (Brazilian guitarist, lovely music) - any album

Belle and Sebastian ( perhaps a bit 'twee' for some folks but I LOVE 'em) - "If You're Feeling Sinister" or "Boy with the Arab Strap"

Beth Orton (alternative folk?) - Newest album "Daybreaker" is great

Bevinda (neo fado?) - "Chuva de Anjos"

Bright Eyes (intelligent 'indie') - "Fevers and Mirrors"

Calexico (kinda 'roots indie', interesting mix of influences) - any album

Buffalo Daughter ( Japanese alt/indie band) - "New Rock"

Death Cab for Cutie ('indie') - We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes"

DNTEL ( kinda electro/indie mix) - "Life Is Full of Possibilities"

Guided by Voices (greatest undiscovered band in the world) - "Universal Truths and Cycles" (newest album, a good into to the band)

Mariza (fado) - "Fado em Mim"

Morphine (sax based indie/rock/jazz/blues) - any album

Nena Venetsanou (Greek singer) "Zeimbekiko (Profane Prayer)"

Neutral Milk Hotel (kinda neo-a lot-of-stuff) - "On Avery Island"

Northern Picture Library (kinda ambient pop) - "Alaska"

Piano Magic ( kinda ambient experimental/pop) - "Mort Aux Vaches" or "Son de Mar

Natacha Atlas (middle eastern/electro/dance/dub) - pretty much any album

And I'll leave it at that (or I'll end up listing about 3000 albums ) except to add, any Adrian Sherwood dub compilation album

            Anybody?

Does anybody here shares the thought that David Coverdale is the most talented and gifted rock/blues singer in the world?? For everything he did with Deep Purple, Whitesnake (not just '1987'!) Jimmy Page...

For me is quite simple: David on earth and Elvis on heaven...

That depends on how you define a rock or blues singer.
For sheer vocal talent, the late Freddie Mercury was probably the finest frontman ever to step on stage. However, Robert Plant in his early days had a voice that was perfect for rock and the electric blues found on early Zeppelin albums, although his actual vocal talent is nothing special.
In the same style, Creedence Clearwater Revival vocalist Tom Fogerty (or was it John Fogerty?) had a superb voice for their style of rock, and if you ever listen to 'Long as I can see the light', he makes a damn good bluesy singer too.

Although not strictly speaking a rock or blues singer, theres one man who's talent cannot be denied : Tom Jones.
And before you start laughing, go find a copy of his 'Reload' album.

A man who has it all. Soul, power, charisma, sex appeal (many people forget that rock n' roll, blues has a lot of t's fun based on sexuallity, at least for me ) great composing capabilities, leadership, longevity, and many... many great albums... take Purple's Stormbringer Album, for instance, Slip of the Tongue (with the greate Mr. Vai), Lovehunter, Slide It In.... it goes from blues, through soul, hard rock, ballads (the gratest ones).

Freddie is just GREAT. Queen was certainly one of the greatest bands of all times, they're among Beatles, Stones, and just a few more.

I LOVE Zepp... but for me, the best reason to enjoy them is Jimmy Page. Plant comes second, but, sincerelly David is much much more.

John Fogerty is a great rock/blues singer, i agree... but for me it's not the same league as Coverdale.

And Tom Jones... I must say that I like him, even not hearing (yet) his 'Reload' album...

Interesting to see so many British bands listed, didn't know some of them where so well known over there

Gomez are definitely one of the best bands around at the moment even if Travis seem to get all the awards

I've listen to plenty of 70's Rock, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Rush, Traffic, Focus, Santana etc. I've been lucky enough to see both David Gilmour and Roger Waters live this year as well as Carlos Santana

Used to see lot's of American grunge bands like Fugazi, Mudhoney, No Means No, (Canadian I know ), etc. as well as our own Snuff, Sink, etc.

Ozric Tentacels are a band worth checking out, sort of like a modern version of Gong/Steve Hillage.
