Help needed: anyone from Egypt on the board?

To make it short, I have to go on holidays but I have problems to decide where - I have not much money and not too much interest in seeing civilized places.
So I have thought about Egypt. But...I don't want to make a "someone organized this and bring you around" travel.


Ok, it's a bit foolish, I want to:
- fill my sack with appropriate food and drink,a map, my tent, a photocamera and a portable GPS.
- take a Plane from Italy to Egypt, buy appropriate dressing, rent a camel...
- go right into the desert (and hopefully, came back after 5 days )
(hpefully, came back alive )


Anyone from the place that can help me to understand if it can be done, how to plan it and what I need for such a holiday?
(apart from a bit of luck, but that's no problem, I've none )

Egypt might not be too good an idea to go wandering around on your own in.

I was there in 2000 on a day trip from Cyprus and they were still rather jumpy about tourists getting kidnapped or shot after some incident years ago. Our column of tour busses had an armed escort to go from Port Said to Cairo.

That said, the Pyramids were pretty spectacular (even if there is a KFC and Pizza Hut opposite the Sphynx ) and the museum is amazing.
