I too roll my own, so to speak.
But, in a corporate or academic environ, it is not necessarily bad to buy a good off the shelf model.
Dell Servers and wkst have been good, in my experience.
However, the consumer level stuff from HP and Compaq, at least those I've seen (and not their server stuff) has largely been garbage. They save 7 dollars by putting in crap cdroms, poor airflow, smallest feasable power supply, etc...
Even some entry level gateways are a bit on the weak side. Usually a good mobo (yes I generally consider Intel mobo's to be good. generally), with weak audio, net, video...
What you do get, however, is warranty (from the good manus...) software, etc.
Remember, you and I and people here are technogeekish. we build are own and support our own. But what happens when you and I take our mad skills elsewhere, and leave an employer with no one to support out beautiful machines?
