Don't your bikes HAVE to have lights & reflectors to be on the road at night?
I disagree about the horn though. Can't really carry one of those.

In Michigan we have a "No Fault" law, so it doesn't really matter much who hits who in terms of who pays for injuries; your insurance pays for you and the other guy's insurance pays for him and insurance is mandatory for both.
If someone is stupid enough to drive without insurance they become a tennent of the Michigan State Prison Systems nearest hotel and the States Uninsured Motorist Fund covers the damages.
All fault really affects is who gets points on their license and who can sue for supplimental property damage in our Small Claims Court, and the damages there are limited to $750 USD. This is primarily intended to cover deductables.
Originally posted by az TP, however good your arguments may be, you totally ruin them by the open hatred to cyclists you show here. Prejudice never is a good thing, and showing yours doesn't help you in an argument

I'm not very tolerant of idiots and if you read careful you'll see that I have no argument with any good road user from a Bus driver to cyclist.
However many cyclists have a holier than though attitude ( Therefore put themselfs at greater risk than they should do.) and hence the critsism.
Don't confuse critisism with hate. Otherwise you spend your life thinking a lot of people hate you.

Lights are supposed to be used by cyclists and they are advised to use bright colouring. One silly law in the UK prevents Cyclists using flashing lights. This is silly as you can see them striaght away and you helps as a pedistration and a motorist.
Some cyclists don't use lights at all or just at the back and considering the state of our street lighting at times it's not advisable.
My mother is an OAP and uses hearing aids. Therefore she needs to be warned of the prescence of racing cyclists. The first thing shes aware off is whosh as they go past. Very frightening for someone whos old. If they had a bell she would greatful if they used it. A horn would scare her as well.

Rubank okay 99% is an slight overstatement but it is a very large amount who have very little regard for other users and their own safety.
This could be a sad reflection of todays society. I'm alright Jack and it's always someones elses fault.
If you want I could keep a clipboard and make notes when I'm walking to work.

Doc, how about when a Car driver hits a cyclist or a walker? Do the latter have to be insured, too? Or does the motorist's insurance pay for them, or how is this handled?
TP, you showed something of a holier than thou attitude - at least it seemed so. Don't want to start an argument or flamewar, but maybe you sometimes don't notice how you "sound".

Now where have I said I'm a perfect driver or perfect pedrestrian?? Don't think I have.
Insurance for cyclists yes I agree with that. Pedrestrians perhaps health insurance. A bloke one did manage too claim damages from parents of a kid that ran out in front of his bmw so perhaps insurance is a good idea. Interesting idea.

How about really working public transport? I find the public transport system in Berlin quite good, and for many routes faster (and less hassle) than going by car - plus you don't have to search for parking space. Short distances are faster by bike (plus it helps keeping you in shape). Shopping for the family is of course better by car.

Now thats one thing I would agree with you one hundred percent.
Sheffield used to have the best service in the UK. No one used the car becuase it was very cheap. Other very good factor was that the buses ran on time the time table didn't alter and the bus stops didn't move. Also the bus you caught one day didn't suddenly go to another place the next day.
Then along came Maggie T. Instead off looking at how the system worked in places like Sheffield she decided private companies could do it better. The end result grid lock, dirty pulloting buses. An almost daily changing of service.
Our council is now going to make things worse by knocking down our very small central bus station rather than redevolping it and combining it with our rail station. Bus stops will be scattered all around the city centre. So if you're a stranger you'll be stuffed.
I stayed a few times in Germany near Munich very nice very clean. The public transport excellant you could buy a ticket (As far as I can remember) and use it all day on buses and trains. I also got told off for stepping back into a cycle lane. Something that wouldn't happen in this country.
