Like the storm that sank the Edmund Fitzgerald up on lake Superior on November 10, 1975 when two massive warm and cold fronts collided in what was "a Perfect Storm"... this was a Green Storm.

Lake Superior is one of the most dangerous waterways in the World, even Jacques Cousteau commented he would never return as it was more difficult to deal with than any other body of water he has ever experienced due to the wind, waves, current, frighteningly cold and deep ( http://www.greatlakeslodging.com/reg...superior.shtml )

I lived in the UP of Michigan for a few years and can attest to all of the above.

Yup...the storm that hit the Edmund Fitzgerald was very much a Green Storm. I believe they clocked winds well over 100 mph, which eventually blew off some of the Fitzgeralds hatch covers. Most reports I've seen state that it then was hit by waves ~100 ft high, which combined with the open hatches capsized the Fitz' in seconds.

Comparison for you Europeans: Lake Superior is well known for frequently having storm conditions exceeding those found in the North Atlantic. Once Cousteau got a taste of it he didn't want any more, which greatly entertained the locals to no small degree

I spent quite a bit of time camping/hunting up there as well as in the area around Rogers City in the upper/lower penninsula; just east of the Big Mak.

Yup....that's the UP; you freeze your ass off half the time and then have to dive for cover during storm season

I was watching a documentary on the Edmund Fitzgerald (the largest ofthe Great lake Ships @729') and the best cause they have come up with was a wave of ~100' caused the ship to bottom out on a shoal cracking the hull so serverly that their bildge pumps couldn't keep up when a second wave hit moments later and it was off the radar screens of the Aurthur Anderson. AA which had minutes earlier made it safely to port returned into the storm by request of the Coast Guard to help the ship (which was steaming blind)
