    Math Through the Ages--

Teaching Math in 1950: A logger sells a truckload of
lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of
the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math in 1960: A logger sells a truckload of
lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of
the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math in 1970: A logger exchanges a set "L"
of lumber for a Set "M" of money. The cardinality of
set "M" is 100. Each element is worth one dollar.
Make 100 dots representing the elements of the set
"M." The set C", the cost of production contains 20
fewer points than set "M." Represent the set "C" as a
subset of set "M" and answer the following question:
What is the cardinality of the set "P" of profits?

Teaching Math in 1980: A logger sells a truckload of
lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and
his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the
    number 20.

Teaching Math in 1990: By cutting down beautiful
forest trees, the greedy logger makes $20. What do
you think of this way of making a living? Topic for
class participation and role play after answering the
question: How did the forest birds and squirrels feel
as the logger cut down the trees? There are no wrong
    answers.

Teaching Math in 2000: A logger sells a truckload of
lumber for $100. His cost of production is $120. How
does Arthur Andersen determine that his profit margin
    is $60 ?

My co-worker is about 10 years older than me and when he was in school they had the awful “Approximation” math
            Where 4+4 is approximately 10!

Guess that I’m having problem with convincing him that:

1000*1.25+500*0.80-1000 is not 500!! (actually, if punched into a calculator depending on which arithmetic rules it uses the answer can either be 400 or 650 )
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

If it says anything other than 650, it's wrong.

Frankly, I'm horrified that calculators are in use in our schools.

I honestly can't think of any mathematical concept that requires a calculator to learn. No high school student should have one.

Anyone remember using a slide rule?
Calculators weren't much of an issue when I was in high school as they were barely available and cost about $100 for a simple one.

I dont recall haven calculators back in high school, we only had them 10 adding machines.

                    Technically correct.

I've done square and cube roots the long way, but I dont remember doing logarithms long hand. I'm sure its possible, if anyone ever needs to work it out and is stranded ten thousand miles from the nearest calculator.

Yeah, but you should never have to do out any of those things "the long way". If a problem involves logarithms, an acceptable answer should be:

                      ln(5) + 2

Because doing out the logarithm can only decrease the accuracy of the answer. Similarly, it's better to write:

                      root(57)

Than to compute it, because your computation will only go to 8 digits or whatever.

Besides which, the teacher (or the author of the book) ought to make sure that the problems DON'T have horrifying answers.

So... there really is NO REASON to use a calculator in High School. None.

Besides, there are always log tables.

Nowadays I just use discount factor tables (quicker than a calculator)

My wife is no dummy, and in fact does a first rate job of keeping the family finances in order, but she can't seem to wrap her mind around the fact that in an algebraic equation you do the multiplication functions FIRST! I've tried to prove it to her by demonstration and we've had some pretty ridiculous arguements over the fact that this was all figured out centuries ago by guys a lot smarter than both of us combined and she still won't accept it!

I had to take an algebra class when I went back to college 14 years ago as an OTA student. Even with tutoring, by final exam time my grades were so dismall I was faced with either aceing that final or retaking the class.

So I studied that textbook and memorized all the equation rules until my brain oozed out my ears and by God I ACED THAT TEST.

Haven't even glanced at a math book of any kind to this day.

                            Hm...
                            (1000*1,25+500)*0,8-1000 =400
                            1000*1,25+500*0,8-1000=650

on calculators who dont always do the multiplications first we will get 400 as in:
                            1000*1,25=1250
                            1250+500=1750
                            1750*0,8=1400
                            1400-1000=400

                            in th other case:
                            (1000*1,25)+(500*0,8)-1000
                            1250+400-1000 =650
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

If a calculator does equations (not all do, obviously) and doesn't do multiplications first, it is defective. Take it back.
