Put it this way. Mother pushes pram out in front of car while you're yaking on your mobile. Try steering around her in a controlled manner and avoiding other cars in the process.

I knew someone once who used drive to work while under the influcence of sleeping drugs. It's amazing she didn't kill anyone as she was falling asleep at the desk.

        Thop:
You're right; I even think 90% is even a low estimate for the number of automated gearboxes in the US (and even 85% for manual in Europe is IMO a low estimate).

        Gurm:
Yes, we pay a lot more for cars with automated gearboxes . Bearing in mind that you also need a more powerfull engine, it is an option that easily sets you back €1500-€2000 (approx. equal in $) on small cars.
The last couple of years, airconditioning is becoming more popular, but mostly it still is a costly option (only standard in the larger expensive cars, or in special editions).

You wouldn't believe what you see in other cars while driving a van...

If only someone would outlaw using makeup & eye shadow while driving. Add reading newspapers and masturbation to that as well.....

i dunno what stickshift is (is it behind your steering wheel?) but i'd like a nice porsche with tiptronic to switch gears
are automatic gears cheaper in the US? i think they are more expensive here because they are widely unpopular.

Sadly, I don't think the Doc is joking
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

I once saw a guy shaving in his car (electric, not wet shave!), but he was stuck in a bad traffic jam in central London and wasn't going anywhere.

thop - I'm not sure, but I think stickshift is what we know as regular manual gears, i.e. the stick is between the seats and in front of the handbrake. I remember a line from Married with Children (yeah I know, so sue me): "You know Steve, there's something about a stickshift..."

I'm sure one of the Yanks will correct me if I'm wrong.

My buddy once got a call from a guy in NY, he was troubleshooting his laptop and removing his cd-rom/battery etc.. while driving. My buddy could hear the honking and traffic all around him, not long after the call began he suggested to him that he call back when he is not in his car.

On the other hand, anything that distracts you from having your full attention on the road shouldn't be allowed.

Here in Ontario women are allowed to go topless. And in my town there are quite a few women who actually take advantage of that new law.

Read Gurm's quote, I don't need to say that certain things outside the car can distract you also!

But don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it SHOULDN'T be allowed but is sure hell is distracting!
