  • Duke Nukem 3D

I thought about putting this over in Matrox Gaming, but this seems more like nostalgia than a troubleshooting issue.

For some reason, I really want to play DN3D again. I think it might possibly be the best deathmatch game ever. I remember using dwango on a BBS to do IPX over TCP/IP on my 14.4 modem, and having a blast with this game. Trip mines, pipe bombs, freezing, launching rockets through teleporters. It was all so much fun.

But now I can't find the game, nor have any idea if I could get it to work multiplayer over the internet. Has anybody tried this? I really want to give it another go.

Thanks. It's not the availability that's the problem though. More:

        1. Can I get it to work under XP?
        2. Can I get a multiplayer game going? Do I need an IPX emulator?
        3. Who wants some?

if you don't have an answer by the time I get home tomorrow, I'll try tossing it on a couple of my XP toys and let you know about questions #1 and #2 - question #3 depends on 1 and 2 though
Yes I drive a 13yr old Volkswagen; Yes I'm a dirt poor college student; Yes every tank of gas is more $$ than the value of my car, but it is FUN to drive, so I don't care about your ego or how much your car cost, if you insist on going the exact same speed in the passing lane as the car next to you for 10 minutes, stop being a self righteous ass, move the hell over and just let me by!!!

Ahh, found some stuff. It's going to be tricky, but I've started working on it:

Anyone know if there is a way to get Privateer 2 to run on a new PC? Or at least if there is a game like it in the makings? (Freelancer doesn't count - I want to use a joystick to fly, not a mouse *URK)

Az, I have never played Privateer, but I've found that Freespace 1 and 2 are really marvellous titles

                  Yes, they are

Privateer was a great game IMHO, because of the freedom you had, and the whole universe felt alive. The cutscenes were good, too

I have Privateer original, still closed into his cellophane somewhere into the library. Maybe one day I'll take a look at it

Duke Nukem, bah! Shadow Warrior has got it beat.
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

Nah, I never got in to Shadow Warrior like I did DN3D. Part of it is that the weapons just weren't as cool.

A true master can put a tripmine, some pipe bombs, and a holo-Duke together into a supreme deathtrap - and then freeze the crap out of the guy that tries to sneak up on it

Well, I liked Duke Nukem, but I loved Shadow Warrior. I guess that wacky japanese accent, brutal weapons and an extreme amount of blood and ultra violence just do it for me. The game is just plain hilarious. And lets not forget the vehicles and the nuclear ammo for the rocket launcher.

I'm not sure about Freelancer, but I know Starlancer used the Joystick nicely (they're developed by the same company) Also you might want to look into the new Elite games. They're working on Elite 4, (have been for some time, release it already! But don't release it in an unuseable way, like the third one)
