    and figured to be one of the stars that would have planets similar to ours capable of supporting life we could reach...

      Yup...

      And it'll be an interesting early target for the Space Interferometry Mission (SIM) when it's launched in 2009.

        'Course we need some mo' betta' propulsion. I mean c'mon - we're still traveling using burnt fuel as propulsion. Not pretty, man.

          Umm....uhh... no need to worry, everyone knows that in the year April 5, 2063, Dr. Zefram Cochrane will launch his warp test vessel, named "Phoenix", from an abandoned Titan missile silo in remote Montana and make first contact.

                  ...or maybe you could jump on Paddy's faster-than-the-speed-of-light wired teleporter...

                    What about ion propulsion? Granted it still uses fuel, but no buring needed. Plus you have much longer "burns" for more gentle acceleration.

                      We need something that modifies the speed of light. I hesitate to call it "warp drive", but something similar. Honestly - we're pretty close, with recent discoveries about the malleability of the speed of light.

                        Warp consists of warping the distance between 2 objects so that they are closer together so therefore you don't have to travel as far, but you are still going the exact same speed, hence the reason the call it a "warp" drive. Your not going any faster your just warping physical space to make the distance shorter than it really is.

                        That is the theory behind warp drive anyways.

                          ION drives are a nice idea, but they can only accelerate VERY slowly.

                          It takes a long time to reach a reasonable speed.

                            v=initial velocity+at

                            You can have massive velocity if acceleration happens for longer....higher velocity gives you much shorter trip times....
                            Let us return to the moon, to stay!!!

                              I heard about ION drives, they are super slow. Usually the slingshot around the moon before they turn it on that way they they can accelerate faster.
