I seem to recall a game system called Vectrex that was based on vector graphics. I think Vangaurd may be what he is thinking of. It definitely fits the timeframe.
Never had one myself, so I was always willing to visit friends who did.Waiting on tech support...

Vector-based games were always few and far between. They're easy as hell to spot because the thumbnails generated in MAME look like the night sky through colored filters. The games in my MAME dir that are vector-based are:
Asteroids
Star Trek
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Tempest
