It was her mother's IGA nefritis, which has caused, among nearly non-working kidneys, very high blood pressure (in the end it became uncontrollable, and despite medication got over 210/130 mmHg sys/dia). Also her haemoglobin of between 8 and 12 (normal is 16 to 18, IIRC) caused the fetus to have trouble getting enough oxygen.
The doctors say we were EXTREMELY lucky. They expected her to die..
to be honest the first pics were a bit scary. in the last pics though she looks like a beautiful girl. you can already tell she got style & class, that haircut makes every figaro jealous!
Sure the first pics are scary! I didn't realize back then, but when I look at them now I'm amazed that she could live (not on her own, but still), and that I really didn't see how she looked. To me she was my baby, and I loved her. Just goes to show that love does indeed make you blind (though this is a very good mechanism in this case)
And she really is cute. I know I'm her father, but when I sit there with her on my arm, and the nurses come and talk to her, play with her, and won't go, I'm the proudest man alive
