    IMHO yet another anti-American legal twist in Canadian law whose main thrust seems to be parochialism in media content and delivery. Whatever happened to NAFTA? Ok I guess as long as it favors Canada

    Also: I don't know if you Canadians are aware of it but your hate speech laws are generating quite a bit of controversy OUTSIDE of Canada. Given their propensity for overkill the following scenario doesn't seem to be out of order;

    Madame Chairperson, I move that—

    I object! "Madame" is a sexist term that denigrates persons of the female gender!!!

    Move to strike ‘Madame’ and substitute "warm-blooded female co-citizen".
    It might sound funny, but it's not too far from the truth. People are going to jail in Canada for things that would just get a dirty look here.

    I believe "Orwellian" is the proper term.

      Dr.Mordrid, where are you getting this information?

      As far as I knew it, they replaced the word "Madamoiselle" with "Madame" because "Madamoiselle" meant that you were non-married female. But this is for the French language.

          Absolutely.

          Here in germany, we may speak freely, too - no hate speech, of course, and no lies about auschwitz, for obvious reasons.

          The problem here is not the law, but the media. If I go out and say I don't like what the israeli government is doing (I do NOT want to talk about that subject here, it's just an example!), the media will kill me.

            Yup, and Canada seems to be his favorite choice of all.

            What's strange is he brings up issues of little importance, like the TV dish thing and the "madame" thing.

                  Dr.Mordrid seems to think that Canada is under a sort of social supression because our laws are more strict than in some countries.
