Do yourself a HUGE favor, go take some courses in HEBREW and read the BIBLE in the ORIGINAL LANGUAGE

I've seen you recommending this before, but I seriously doubt whether whe should want that. These ppl are already very good at misconstruing whatever they read in English, regardless of how (in)accurate that translation may be. (Is the NT in Hebrew as well? Kinda doubt it...?!?).

Imagine what they could do if they had the opportunity of misconstruing the original text by translating it for me (as I do not read Hebrew). They might even convince me (well OK, that last part is probably not really true).

BTW, as I understand it, even ppl reading in Hebrew can fiercely disagree about the meaning of the text.

Your best results will be had with an Interlinear translation, which typically has the original language in one column and the translation in the next.

Purely learning Hebrew wont be 100% effective as parts of the old testament were in Aramaic. The new testament of course, was in Greek.

Its worth noting that bible translators usually go back to the oldest known examples of the scripture (eg Dead Sea Scrolls) and translate directly from that, cross referencing with as many other examples as they can find.

Given the way language and use change over time, its highly probable that learning Hebrew or Greek and reading a direct transcript of the most ancient bible known will give you a rather confused view, in the same way reading a Dummies Guide to Windows XP wont help you much when using an IBM XT and Dos 3.2

Actually most >95% of the bible is in Hebrew. The book of Daniel is in aramic. Yet any kid here learns the bible and understands most of what he reads. A dictionary (for words you don't know) and a concordance (to be sure about double meaning words etc.) would answer over 80% of your questions and for those <20% there are wonderfull explanations by Rashi.
I have read parts of the bible in English and felt that there are many subtle meanings and connections missing. Sometimes these subtle things explain quite a lot.

Not trying to be stubborn or anything, but that could also be caused by not appreciating English to the fullest. I'm sure there will be subtleties in English that non-native speakers (and even native speakers) may not grasp. But I'll grant you that in translating, it is very hard to convey all possible meanings/nuances/subtleties (from a reliable source).

And, at the end of the day, lets face it: The Silmarillion is far more interesting to read.

Nope I'll agree with Dogbert here, there are lots of parts that the meaning is lost/not translated corectly.

A good example would be 'sheol' corect my spelling there if i'm wrong.

then catholic bible translates it 63 times into 'hell' the king james translates it 31 times into hell, 31 times into grave and 3 times into pit.

just as an example. I don't particualry want to start a religious debate here, but i could also give you thousands of examples of translating between japanese and english as well.
