Stormy weather.
Or it blocks your runway because a tree (neighbours tree has been uprooted by a severe wind) has fallen on our runway, it just missed our house by a few centimeters (5 a 10 cm). The tree was about 20 meters long and about 45 year old. So you can imagine how big the tree was.Main: Dual Xeon LV2.4Ghz@3.1Ghz | 3X21" | NVidia 6800 | 2Gb DDR | SCSI

Suppose to be Hot (~30c) and Sunny (UV Index 11) here..."Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." -- Dr. Seuss

Of course the leaves dumped themselfs in my pond.
It's now calmed down. It's funny how experts forget. Had one on ITV saying this is rare and you won't get anymore like this for a couple of years. Okay how about the beginning of this year. 59 mph in Jan 79 mph in Feb and 81 mph Mar. Those were max gusts in the months. Not so rare really.

You should have tried 1973 and 1977.
1973 we had 26 inches of wet snow in 12 hours.
1977 we only had 8-12" of snow, but there were also 60+ mph winds. Uppance: in open areas a blizzard with 10-20 foot snow drifts that caused the region to be classified a disaster area.
My parents still lived on the farm then and the drifts were up to 2nd story windows and in some cases over the roof. They and the other farmers near them had to be transported by snowmobile to waiting National Guard amored personnel carriers for evacuation.
The only way the National Guard could even get to them to do that was to put a MAMMOTH snow plow on the front of a tank

Something like that happened in 78/79 here in southern sweden, aswell. I wasn't not alive back then but I have seen pictures and heard stories from elders. Bottomline: snow is nice but not in excessive amounts, just like alcohol.
And it seems the storm that passed GB is here as of typing!Last edited by Novdid; 27 October 2002, 19:56.

hehehe....
You guys get nailed because of the North Atlantic and we get nailed because of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.
We call it "lake effect" snow; the warm water in the lakes from a hot summer stays that way into fall/early winter. The first major storm that comes through then sucks up that warm water and dumps it on Michigan & Ontario by the foot.
Once we get ours it goes out over lakes Huron, Erie and Ontario for a recharge. Then Pennsylvania, New York (esp. Buffalo) and much of the rest of New England get hammered.

I see. Offcourse it's more rare here than it is over there though.
On a sidenote. The Northamerican continent seems to be perfectly formed (or placed if you will) for extreme weather. Blizzards in the north hurricanes in the south, and let's not forget the tornadoes.
We had a lot of rain over here this year though that resulted in the worst floodings in over 1000 years in some parts of Central Europe. The water that should have been dumped in the North Atlantic was pushed south. That's a bit extreme too actually.
