This must have been suggested a thousand times but why not use banner adds to support the site? I personally would not mind having a non intrusive add in the main page.
I take it you weren't around in the days when we did... man some of them were the most intrusive... not to mention lack of control over what was displayed
Personally I think this is the best solution... and a damn sight easier on your eyes than some of those seizure inducing ads we use to have

A new computer game costs around 40 USD here, although I wasn't supposed to buy any during this or the next month, I guess I'll wait with it a while longer . I hope I'll be able to donate some more later cause it seems the economy isn't being good to any of us lately .
