If you want to know the root cause of [all] of those acts (and many others) you need to go back farther.
The stage was set 20 years ago when we did not respond at all to the first violent attack by Muslim suicide bombers on Americans.

In a completely out of character move, then President Reagan turned tail and ran.
I have never understood what in the world caused this action (or lack thereof) by an otherwise resolute leader.

It provided a victory that informed the entire Muslim extremist movement for decades to come.

Silence implied consent, like it always does.
This made it more difficult both politically and diplomatically for the following Presidents to respond these kinds of things.
Why do you think there was even a discussion around the world about us having the right to go into Afghanistan after 9/11?
