It's the AFSCME (public employees union) distoring the whole economy again. Same old same old since they became the agent for federal employees.

The problem is that they not only get a percentage raise but a COLA (Cost Of Living Allowance) based on the rate of inflation. Very often the formula for this increase is highly distorted because management groups tie their increases to what their underlings get.

COLA's were first devised to counter the stag-flation economy Jimmy Carter gave us in the 1970's. To give you an idea of how much COLA's distorted incomes; when I worked for the county hospital back then I got a check for ~$1,500 every 3 months... and this was in 1979-1980!!

def. stag-flation: high inflation (20% at some times) tied to stagnation in the gross national product.

Of course stag-flation disappeared and the COLA's didn't, even with the current historically low overall inflation rates.

The result is inflationary wage increases that, as noted, distort pricing....especially local to concentrations of those workers.

BTW you do realise that part of what I said was in jest... especially knowing that you did install the new flooring (albiet in serious pain)

I was laid off in September, I just don't make tons of "woe is me" bullshit noise here on the forums.
I still don't think the economy is bad. It's more market whiplash. A little more time and companies will realize that trying to live quarter-to-quarter is detrimental in the long run. There are a lot of healthy companies that never forgot that, they just don't make many headlines.
Tons of "woe is me" bullshit? I say one thing and its tons of me bullshit. Oh, I get it. I disagree with you so you attack me. I don't talk about it hardly at all even with my family. I was making a point. If you don't like go grab a number 2 pencil and sharpener and you can get your own damn point.

Actually my son Erik (3 1/2 at the time) did much of the flooing job prep. Never seen anyone better at pulling nails & staples than that kid, we even got him his own hammer, pliers and cats paw (nail puller)....and he worked for Oreo's

My wife did most of the measuring and cutting. I just laid on the floor doing the positioning and gluing of the panels (Pergo = great stuff).

shesh....... you think things are bad in europ and the us..... you should see how things are here...... unemployment is high..... there are more forigners in the labor market than there actualy are lebanese........ companies refuse to pay high wages since the forigners will work for less..... the avarage calery that a lebanese makes is about $300/mo .... for a full time job no extra perks..... if you dont know someone high up you dont get a job wether you are more qulified or not....... i work 40hr/week get $1,000 (because i work at an american uni) but still i am considerd as a part time employee so no benifits for me..... oh and no overtime (lthough i put in about 50hr/mo overtime "vulentarali"....... things are way to expensive here... i just recently realised that the phone company has been robing me (they where regestring extra calls on my acount,,, calls i hadent made) apartments avarage around $500K...... they run up to $3m in some cases and you want find any decent apartments for less than $100k..... many companies just keep going bankrupt.... oh and every one is looking out for a way to rip you off.....
                    so on and so forth........
