In fact it is the same here, at least in Southern Finland. I can't understand it, but I hope there's some kind of hidden logic behind it - after all, driving on normal winter roads isn't much more difficult than driving in the summertime. Well, until I hear their great explanation I wish they'd just push away that drift of snow that accumulates between the lanes, instead of spewing salt all over the place.

They could use hot sand and geta better result without destroying peoples cars....

They used sand here and it's not very effective. Once the snow falls again it's all covered up. In Alberta they use wood shavings for their parking lots that way if ever the snow starts to melt a bit, instead of sinking to the bottom like sand and instead of rusting cars away like mad with calcium, the wood shavings float to the top providing excellent traction.

Not to mention that salt also ruins you pants and shoes and the interior of your car and when they plow the snow and put it all in one location, that location becomes a toxic area and it pollutes the water, etc...

Calcium (or salt) is effective but it has many drawbacks.

They have a slight problem with speed humps and snow ploughs here. Since they've stuck them in it hasn't snowed a lot but we just need throw back to one of our snowy winters and it could be interesting.
