  • Do you want "security" with TCPA ?! This would be dangerous...

    Hi all,

I'm not one of the very active users of this board, but I'm sure some of you have already heard of TCPA? But especially if you don't know what TCPA stands for: You REALLY have to know.

We've put something together under http://www.againsttcpa.com

You will find FAQs in different languages, possibilities what you can do against it as a user and as a webmaster and such things.

We hope it's not too late to stop this crazyness...

    Greets,
    Michael Ritter

the german mag c't is quite active regarding that topic - and I certainly don't want tcpa in my box.

sad to hear that the upcoming processors (athlon64 &co) will "feature" tcpa/palladium.

Some very good discussion are going on at the PocketMatrix forums:

It's nothing really new there, but peope who're not so familiar with TCPA and such things should get some impressions why we're so upset.

uhh... i think you guys gotta stop listening to what other people are saying about it and read the things for yourself...

as of right now TCPA and Palladium does not do anything as far as DRM goes. Look at the list of companies that are part of TCPA... name one of them that represents a motion picture company, record studio, or any other content producer.

stop listening to those fools who are on a soapbox. a lot of what they are spouting off are assumptions, just plain idiotic, or only one (very rare) possibility of what will happen.

there seems to be very few people around who acctually have an understanding of the technology...

I understand why you are all upset about it. I am upset about it, too. Unfortunately, citizens have no influence over their legislators in the United States, unless it is as a source of mirth that some of us actually think our republic works as it should. We are living in a state of corporate feudalism. Senators and representatives only care about big corporations and their interests. Minor things like law, the constitution, and fair play are just a joke to them. Fritz hollings and his ilk are scurrilous traitors to the principles espoused in our constitution, but the constitution is an insignificant scrap of paper now. The only thing that matters is the greed of the big corporation. That is the only real law.

just to make sure that everyone understands:

I have already seen a user loose al his WMA files because a CPU+ bios uppgrade (XP had to be activated again and....)

Still, MS is not a MPAA or RIAA member

Technoid, it wouldn't be hard backing up the data or reactivating windows in those situations...

as far as being afraid of this stuff, it does have the possibility to be harmful to consumers, but... there are several reasons i believe it probably won't be...

the MPAA and the RIAA have already pissed off a number of large electronics manufacturers with their demands... a number of the manufacturers have basically said "screw it" to DRM because its a hassle and a half and the users do not like it. their electronics is their bread and butter... in this era where profit margins are razor thin (comparatively) these manufactures are not gonna risk their profits just because the MPAA or RIAA tell them to.

look at DiVX. good example of why companies won't want to do it.

Same thing will apply to the computer world. many companies are tired of one or two groups bossing everyone around.

the moment a company implements this technology in the way that 90% of the people on the internet thinks it will happen is the moment that company commits suicide.

as far as the government goes, this will teach everyone to pay more attention to who they vote into power...

Oh, you mean our wonderful power to choose either the Republican in Disney's right pocket or the Democrat in their left?

                  What a scam.

It really matters little since so many voters have been dumbed down by being taught how to think by the media. Look what happens to me on this forum whenever I challenge this "approved mentality"... attacked by lots of people who cannot form original thought themselves, but can only regurgitate the mindset programmed into them by the media.

                    DGhost....
His WMA files were created with the "protect my files feature in WMP7" active!!!
He can't play the ones he had on CD either!!!
Neither he or I knew that "protect my files feature in WMP7" was active as standard, he actualy though that he was encoding MP3's

And "unlocking them" is not possible!

TCPA has such big potential for abuse that its horryfying

Ahhh, i see what you mean... thats one of the reasons i don't use WMA (among others)...

however, if he was able to create them he should be able to recreate them... he has/had access to the CD... next time around he can know to disable the DRM support... or he can backup the liscenses for his music (as WMP does support it... even says you should do it in the help files...).
