US Issues warning on WMD

Most of this "new" policy isn't. Back in Gulf War I it was made very clear to Saddam that if he used WMD's we would respond with nukes.

What is new is that we *might* consider pre-emption....meaning, for example, that if a Predator sees a radiation or chemcial signature indicating a WMD in preparation for launch we reserve the right to use whatever means is necessary to stop it.

And i agree with Joel, the war will get very ugly for Iraqis, either way. Just that every Iraqi will believe (and already does) that the #1 reason for their suffering are the US, and if the US send troops into cities the outcome of this will be a big mess for the US.

Having known many Iraqi's in my days I can tell you that they are much more sophisticated and modernistic than the Palestinians and others in the area.

They march when told to, but will turn on Saddam in a hearbeat once they figure the allies mean business and they stand a good chance of getting rid of him and his ilk. Remember what happened to Ceausescu?

remember what happened to the Kurds and the marsh arabs the least time they revolted? - in case you forgot - they got no support from deseart storm - they werent the 'preferred' flavour of arab for rulling iraq.... do you think that the Iraqis have forgotten this? - I dont think so!

which others ? You critisize Saudi in earlier posts (the whabi references) - who are more sophisticated in the ME? The palestineans have been bombed into last week - they wont be 'sophisticated' for at least a generation now.

Yes...the mainstream Iraqi is more sophisticated than the mainstream Saudi if for no other reason than they don't adhere to Wahabist theology, which is stuck in the 6th century, and have a history of having a more secular society much akin to the Turks.
