  • Powel for president

This is mainly directed to the americans but anyone can express his opinion.

Do you believe that Powel could have won the elections in 2000 if he had run for it?

    Colin Powell?

    You know he's black, right???

    Would he stand a chance?

      I don't really know

In the US you must be politically correct so many times people do not "express" their true feelings or ideas. Despite that, I think people would vote without regard to colour.

Yes, he's black, but he's one of the most honorable people in public service. I don't think he wants to be president though.

No. It's sad to say, but although many people (including myself) WOULD vote for him, he's ... black.

Sadly, prejudice is alive and well in much of this country.

I got to hear him speak at an alumni dinner. What an amazing man. He has no place as President though: he's too clean for the job.

I thought he was a naturalized citizen, and couldn't run anyway. Am I right, or just thinking up crazy things?

Edit: Ok, I don't know where I got the notion he was not born in U.S., He was born in New York

Colin Powell was born in the US and raised in the Bronx, a borough of New York City. His parents were, however, naturalized citizens.

Gen. Powell is the most respected figure in American public life. Period. Take a poll anywhere in the US, anytime, and that's what you'll see with very few exceptions.

Contrary to Gurm's traditional negativism Colin Powell could easily be elected President if he ran, and race would NOT be an issue in 95% of the country. The other 5% no one cares about anyhow

Hell...when you go into a lot of the mom & pop stores in our area (suburban Detroit: 90% plus white) you still see his picture up on the wall in uniform, where it's been since 1991.

When Republican leaders were polled as to who should replace VP Cheney if his health forces him off the Republican ticket in 2004 guess who was #1 on the hit parade?

                    Gen. Colin Powell.

Such a move, of course, would make him the hands-down favorite for the Republican Presidential nomination in 2008. Because of health issues with his wife, however, I doubt he ever will run.

Guess who was #2 in that poll for a 2004 VP replacement?

                    Dr. Condoleezza Rice

She is Presidents Bush's National Security Advisor and a black woman.

Third was Rudy Giuliani; former mayor of New York City.

And I think that the Republican rank and file feels the same way. Add the Independent voters, who by every poll I've seen absolutely love the man, and it's my opinion he'd win huge.

I don't know much about Powell considering politics, but he seems like a decent guy. I believe he's also less pro war than the rest of the administration, no? (i might be wrong though).
condoleezza rice seems a bit unsymphatic to me, however i know next to nothing about her.

Most military leaders here are hesitant to go to war until the diplomatic options have been explored first, but when you run into an intractable issue like Iraq then it's time to get out of their way 'cause the train's leaving the station

                        As for Condi Rice, she's quite acceptable to me as a candidate. She can be quite personable, just don't get under her skin when she's on task. She can be very tough when the need arises. These anecdotes should illustrate this nicely;
A Soviet specialist, Rice was discovered by Republican foreign policy adviser Brent Scowcroft at a dinner in 1986.

Rice, "a little slip of a girl," held her own in the company of older, white males, Scowcroft recalls. He asked Rice to join the NSC (National Security Council) in 1989, when he became the senior Bush's national security adviser.

Later that year, Bush introduced her to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev by saying, "This is Condoleezza Rice. She tells me everything I know about the Soviet Union."

As a member of the National Security Council staff in 1989, Condoleezza Rice physically blocked (Boris) Yeltsin, who was the Soviet opposition leader at the time, from seeing the first President Bush without an appointment.

More recently, as national security adviser to the second President Bush, Rice told Israel's new prime minister (Ariel Sharon) that his desire to sell early-warning planes to China was a nonstarter. When Sharon persisted, Rice said coolly that if he continued raising the matter, the meeting was over.

The old Israeli warrior was left gasping, witnesses say.
IMHO anyone who underestimates either her or her boss is doing so at their own risk

You're so full of it KvH. The media will dig on whomever. Marion Barry got plenty of coverage (yet somehow, the bastard still got re-elected).
