You failed to omit that the federal tax is calculated from the subtotal that includes the provincial tax. Or is it the other way around?

nah, that's not (only) taxes - that includes health-, unemployment-, retirement insurance and whatever...

although our sales tax is quiet high too - 20% on anything except food (10%).

Just had my annual overview on 2002. Slighlty above 45% in income taxes. Depending on my bonus this year (announced in 2 or 3 weeks) it'll be a bit higher or lower than 45%.
This is not including unemployment and health insurance (although the latter is paid to a large extent from income taxes).
I'm proud to be able to contribute this much to my country, so you won't hear me complain about the level of taxes I pay per se.

edit:I will be able to claim some taxes back because of some fiscal thing we have over here (mortgage interest is not taxed) which would lower my avergae tax rate by about 3%.
