30GB/month for this site That doesn't make any sense at all MURC is not a image laden site so where does all this get used? Downloads of drivers c/should be redirects to official sites/shared amongst mirrors. The forum is the most used bit of the site I guess.

Also, what the hell do you 'need' root access for? Being all powerful is only great if you have a real need to [ab]use it

Your comment on speed doesn't really mean anything - you have to look at where most of the MURC visitors come from and judge the speed from their perspective. I ping 170 (19 hops) to the current host and 280 (28 hops) to the likely replacement.
    Cheers, Reckless

The post a pic thread, and the occasional rumor gone balistic does wonders MURC's bandwidth usage

I didn't say we use 30GB every month, I said we need to allow room to.

As for "what the hell do you 'need' root access for?"

Have a look through the site feedback error list, I belive I have already explained the reason for 'root' in this threads twin in the lounge.

The drivers are already redirected to matrox. I belive we were at 40GB or so a month before when we hosted them here.

As for location, there are a number of factors, and a ping count of 280 (irrelevent of hops) as you say murc isn't 'image laden' so waiting an extra .2 of a second for you page to load isn't a problem.

Continueing to pay burst an obscene amount of money for the quality of service we have received is the problem. Our own dedicated server, that I can fix email problems, restart the server, massage apache and the mysql into behaving is the point of a dedicated server. Not having to wait 3.5 weeks for tech support to fix our email, finially work out they don't know how to fix that server, and then screw up three times trying to move us to another server is the problem.

As for the speed comparison, it was simplyl a FYI, and related to the pipe to the internet, and not your ping time.

Another reason for a server here, as I am the one dealing with it, is I can go kick their butts myself - without having to make the montly long distance call to the states to interupt sleeping tech support guys.

So who's going to administer the site when you're unavailable Dan? I hope the new provider will handle 24/7 management without your assistance.

In my absence there are people to take care of the server, already planned that one.
As stated elsewhere, the host, only touches the box incase of hardware faults.

The closest translation I can give you is co-located server for the service, tech support is available 24/7, but only in terms of complete system crash, unable to log in remotely etc.

The server comes with a nice set of management tools, as well as the guarntee that the host won't move us/play with the server/change settings without telling. which btw is where 99% of our failures have come from with burst.

No need to get angry That last statement says all you needed to say. I don't care where it's hosted, I just dislike additional (and mostly) irrelevant information when there's an underlying reason as you pointed out.

Hop count is important - the more you have the more chance there is of there being a problem en route. A single hop in an internal network is not a problem but cross world hops can be - as can be seen by two significant jumps in latency when navigating to the site.

Cheap ass b*stard at the moment so I only donated a little, like I said maybe a little more at the end of the month, we can't be having the MURC disappear, wherever would we all spend our time.

I thinks Zokes would actually die!

Hmmm, don't know what I'd do.

Here are the odds of what would happen to me (upon the discovery of the end of MURC)

                  Commit Suicide: 50%
                  Go Insane: 75%
                  Have Fits of Rage: 85%
                  Cry like little baby: 98%
                  Rampage: 90%
                  Depression: 90%
                  Turn to Crime: 25%
                  Turn to Drugs: 45%
                  Become Alcoholic: 0.00001%
                  Spontaneously Combust: 99.99999999%

To tell you the truth, with all the devoted MURCers here, I'm not too too worried.
