thanks for the reply Sasq. I actually do trust the people behind MURC, but I think somehow someone got access to your db, because there would be *no* other way one would send me email to murc@domain.com.
Maybe the server logs could tell something, or you could find an entry that corresponds to the spammer's originating ISP (hosting.letterwealth.com).

Keep us updated if you find anything!
    thanks!

I'll have to take a peak in a few days, I'm really busy at work, and I have no net connection at home at the moment. Actually I wont be around a great deal for a few weeks - some personal problems/changes that I dont wish to go into at this time.

I'll have a look, getting into the db itself is hard, but thats not to say that someone hasnt found a bug in vb to get it to spew up addresses.

LOL when I read the title I was like...

All MURCers hate spams anyway... no one here will ever do it.

          IN MURC WE TRUST!!!!!

First impression to me is somebody hacked the DB, but i doubt it... encryption and all that stuff right?

          weird werid weird

I haven't check my mail for weeks.. so i dun really know if i got the same male or not :|

only people that have actual db access are myself, ant and the burst staff. thats all passworded away. (actually dont have my bookmarks here, so i dont have access at work either)

As I said it might be possible to eak it out from vBB somehow. I'll go off and check the bug/vulnerability reports in a bit

I even get spam directed at an e-mauil address that I have that:
              1. I have never ever used
              2. Never ever given out to anyone, anywhere, anytime, anyhow.

I am thus wondering if my ISP is selling these addys...

Another time, I got a shitload of undeliverable failures on mails that were spam, were not send out by me, but had _MY_ address as sender....

I too got the paypal spam e-mail to my account - first spam on that account.

                Reads same as posted above.

The account is used to register @ MURC and arstechnica.

For other sites I keep more general anonymous account arround.

okay guy's lay off the paranoia!
I got myself a new mail account last time I had changed ISP.
First time I ever checked if I had configured the mailclient correctly I got over 20 spams!!!
And that from an adress that was a bunch of random numbers and letters that had never ever been used in any way before!!
spammers sends mail to any adress remotedly posibly and as they always forge the return adress they can test 2 adresses in one
