  • different settings based on connection/client?

    Hello,

Perhaps a strange question. Currently, the settings (e.g. show signatures,
avatars, ...) are stored on the server.

In some cases, it might be interesting to have this on the clientside:
when I connect via Lynx (yes, this happens; this message is typed in
Lynx ), it would be interesting not to have signatures), when I connect
through my PDA, it would be interesting not to have avatars (speed +
volume; disabling all images seems too harsh). Storing the information in
a cookie would allow me to have different settings on different systems.

I know this is not important, and I don't know if there are
disadvantages (nor how of if this is possible in vbulletin). So, are there
    other opinions, thoughts, ...?

use a different account for reading from these devices, maybe? Won't help with posting, of course...

BTW, why do you use lynx?

Yes, but as you said: it could become confusing for posting.
(and shock, horror: it would split my postcount over a number of accounts
      )

BTW, why do you use lynx?
I currently am using a computer not under my control (so I can't
install software) and have limited access to a mouse on this particular
      PC.
Also, Lynx goes blazingly fast, both in loading as in navigating, and
      this is sometimes fun...

Not having a mouse is no problem when you are using a good browser

It is possible to run Opera from a USB stick without installing it.

And it has a text browser mode

          1. I have no priveleges to install software on this computer
          2. USB ports are blocked (case is screwed in a custom made furniture).
          3. CD rom drive is iffy...

But there is a terminal client, which allows me to connect to my server. Hence: lynx.

The text mode on Opera is just terrible (sorry ). And no matter how you put it: lynx running on the server will be faster than any browser on that PC (it has an entirely different network-route, which has a lower bandwith, hosts more PCs and passes an additional firewall).

          (some people like Lynx )

(also: it just sounds cool: "which browser do you use?" "Lynx" )

Yes, Opera's text mode is terrible

I like "only show cached images" though
