  • Murc fundraising idea

I've got a few pieces of hardware I'd like to go to a good home,
rather than give them away I'd like them to go to the best offer, with ALL the proceeds going to MURC (shipping would be extra).
I'm sure there may be others here that may want to donate some piece or other to MURC to help Sasq pay the bills.
Would it be too hard to set up some mini-auction on the site? If not would there be a simple way to keep track of bids without taking up too much of anyone's time?
Would anyone else be interested in participating?

    Just a thought.
Yeah, well I'm gonna build my own lunar space lander! With blackjack aaaaannd Hookers! Actually, forget the space lander, and the blackjack. Ahhhh forget the whole thing!

that could work. I have some older parts sitting around too.. I suppose the winning bid pays all shipping, but the price for the item goes to sasq .. it could work

Great idea, if someone wants to buy used hardware.

OK, I've got a few pieces, I'll open each one as a seperate thread in the happy shopper.
If the is enough interest, maybe we can open up a seperate forum.
Folks can post a bid, or PM if they want to remain Annie Nonimous.

well, not too much interest in the hardware
regardless, I've sent a payment to Sasq of approx what shipping would have cost me.

I liked the idea, but had no use for the hardware... (I have a G200 still lying around unused, it is more or less my spare card for trouble shooting, a Mystique in a Pentium 166 which hasn't booted in 5 years or so, ...).

Any chance we see some metal gadgetery again?
(I realy like my keyfob )

Nope, most of our bottles are still for men

I think the original MURC fob might be large enough to fit a can opener into - I just don't know if the steel is strong enough.

The material I used is what is refered to here as O-1 tool steel. It is easily workable in it's soft state and can be heat treated to over 62 Rc hardness.
I never got around to heat treating the Fobs due to various reasons, but you can easily do it yourself if you like.
Heat the fob with torch till it gets red hot (about 1375 F). You can tell when it reaches the critical temp when it becomes non-magnetic. (use a small magnetic pickup tool to test it)
When it reaches this point, quench it (drop it in a litre of used oil). It is now very hard, but brittle.
Now put in your oven at about 450 F for about 1 hour.
let it cool. Now you've got a very hard and strong piece of steel (approx 60-62 rockwell) that would destroy a standard drill bit
There are plenty of folks that use this steel for home made knifes/swords due to it's ability to be readily hardened.

sadly, it's very difficult to ship bevarages overseas, or even over borders.
Besides, it would never make it past my front door
