Look at it this way. Most users will look for a card that has good 3d speed and is fairly reliable and fairly cheap. Upto now the cards that fit into this category are some of the Voodoo series, Geforce MX and Radeon le. However in a few weeks time this will change. We will have a card that has brilliant 2d, good (average) gameplay, excellent dualhead, superb drivers and a quality feel about it like no other. What more can you say? It may not be a screamer but it is what sells to the masses and provided it is not too heavily priced it should do well for itself.

I'm just worried that we'll see a card with MX power and GTS price. Quality isn't cheap, and Matrox has always been a bit more expensive than the competition.

But we can all pray or hope that the Big M's nest card will kick more ass than Jackie Chan on steroids!

So what kind of performance do we really need? I mean is running Quake 3 at 170 fps better than running it at say 72 fps? If it can provide some very good fps in most 3D games than that's what really counts here.

But still, Matrox is one of those companies that surprises most of us by bringing out some new fancy cool feature that usually ends up on all other cards, like DualHead and EMBM. I'm confident that they can easily follow the market and bring out a new kick ass card.

But it is wise at this time to wait because there's this useless battle going on right now to be the FPS king and let's face it, most of us don't really need the framerate, but the competition does help the advance in technology to move faster.

(if ever the day comes when you need a 800MHz cpu with 256mg RAM and a 64mb AGP video card to be able to smoothly post a thread on MURC than I'll be damned!)

If the next card is slower than an MX, I would find it unbelieveable (I mean what on earth have M been doing for the last 2 years?????). But I wouldnt cry, I just wouldnt buy it. And to be honest, I cant think of who will? Even business OEMs will surely go for cheaper competition. So that leaves the, fanactical about quality, pure business user.

Surely ne1 with the slightest interest in games will go for a similarly priced, and MUCH faster competition. 'ell you could get a GTS in the UK for £100 from Dabs.

            /shakes head

(oh and if they have waited 2 years to release another dud card, Im sure as hell not going to wait for them to release a pure gaming card)

Ok ok, so not every card was great, but still, I remain confident that Matrox has an Ace up their sleeve.

Question is as to when they will play it.

Yeah, doesn't do much good to play their ace when everyone else at the table is holding a royal flush.

I believe that the G550 will be faster than a MX or a Radeon VE; however, I also think that it DOES NOT stand a chance performance-wise against what ATI/NVIDIA/ST/S3 will throw at it during Q3-Q4 2001. If they have a REAL ace (I believe the G550 is only a joker), they better get it out before the GeForce 6 and 10 are out (NVIDIA's CEO has already referred to them )

Yup.. its over. From M's own mouth as seen on the MURC main page.
"Matrox stressed that their next-generation product will continue targeting the business market with new features aimed squarely at productivity and communication....many comparisons will be made to ATI's RADEON VE and NVIDIA's GeForce2 MX."

Whelp, those cards are at the low-end of the 3D performance scale now. Looks like my prediction was (unfortunately) correct, that by the time the new Gxxx card comes out, it'll be considered low-end 3D, if that.

Screw this... time to look at ATI.

I think you left out some stuff rylan.

"Gaming capabilities have also been enhanced,.... The most impressive aspect of the upcoming offering will be price, as Matrox has really bent over backwards to make sure their product will pack plenty of punch for the asking price."

"Though Matrox has not talked about their rumored high-end product, we still maintain some semblance of belief that they will not be exiting the performance market entirely..."
