well, when its slower, according to Haig, than my G400MAX, thats when it makes sense to whine. Personally, i dont think the card has a purpose, or if it does, its going to do a horrible job trying to fulfill that purpose.First Love:- Lite-On FS020 enclosure w/4 120mm Panaflos and soon a 172mm Nidec
- MSI 694D Pro w/ BIOS 1.6
- 2x800E cC0 Pentium 3 w/ 2xVolcanoII
- SyncMAX(NEC) PC166 VCM SDRAM 4x128mb w/ CAS = 1
- nVidia Quadro2 Pro, but Matrox at heart
- And other non-important stuff like hard drives and a dvd drive
- Pineapples
Second Love:

You guys make it sound like the G550 is the culmination of Matrox's efforts over the past couple of years. Is it? I thought the G550 was agreed to be just another product between the G400 and the TRUE nextgen (new core) that they are STILL working on, the fabled G800. G550 != G800. It's hard to believe that all the "you just wait" and "we're working on something..." talk that we've picked up here and there for all this time is reflecting the G550. Could we get back to speculating about the real deal, the G800?

Why is it that when a new matrox card comes out, the first thing everybody does is: "Oh its slower than the Radeon" or " oh its slower than the Geforce". Doesn't anybody here buy a video card because they need it for a specific purpose, or just to say that its the best?? I don't give a flying shit whether its faster than a Geforce 3,4,5, just give me something that runs games at my max. resolution fine (which is 1280x1024). and with the additional features that matrox offers. I hope the G550 does this.....
BTW IMHO, I don't see this headcasting feature going off. Professionally, it definitely won't, which leaves the recreational market. I just wished they had spent the last year or so making a card that provided us with something we needed, like an increase in speed. That would have been nice...

When Matrox did that interview where they basicaly said that we wern't going to be happy with their next card, I figured that it pretty much confirmed the rumored specs of the g550. So I (and I think many of you) wern't really suprised.
Any way, I think this gives new light to some of the rumors that we hear, so don't some of you start bitching next time a new rumor pops up!
As for this card, I'm not too disapointed. A little confused however. Maybe Matrox was having fab problems with test chips, or whatever, 'cause this card is cripled by that 64 bit bus. Clock speed is another thing, because we can overclock and fix that, but we can't fix the memory issue. It doesn't seem like it would take too much more engineering to make this a salvageable card. If they do release a max version, I think it will be what many of you are looking for(i.e. a matrox card that performs about as good as a kyro 2 and the like?)
I'll probably keep my g400 till december so I still got time to hope. And by no means does this sour me to Matrox(well, maybe a little). I'll still be on the edge of my seat with every rumor (although Matrox should learn something from all this rumor stuff and be more forthcomming)

Matrox will be to them what RAMBUST was to Intel... Let's hope this is not the case...
Maybe... maybe Matrox has been working on the amiga-chip all the time, and thus the G550 is so late and so ... G450
If they did so, I sure hope it's PC compatible...

its at www.chip.de (in german though), and while it doesnt say anything about matrox, it says that amiga is gonna introduce a new system and software soon. from what i remember reading in this forum, amiga and matrox were cooperating, werent they??
PS: you might try www.chip-online.com i think its the same page in english.

That's correct. and if I remember correctly it was clearly said that M was going to provide the next-gen graphics adapter for the amiga. Some Amiga guy said that they were at Matrox and that they were shown the G800 (yes he said g800) and that he was very impressed.
This adapter could hardly be the g550.
But if you look at it this way: When nvidia produced the graphics and other stuff for Xbox they released a strip down version of the GPU that is going to be in the Xbox, and voĆla, we have a Geforce 3. Matrox could do this with the Amiga hardware, but will probably not do it anyway.
