G450 no overlay Video on both monitors and wont be implemented.adn now this......This just SUCKS !!!

Matrox never claimed to allow overlay on two CRT's. Try this with a VE or MX and tell me your results

So what if they are working on something else. Just how much work would it have been to use a 128bit DDR memory bus instead of 64bit bus anyway and make a useful video card.

When are matrox going to start showing that they are serious about the graphics business, because if they arn't, they should just say so. That way I can piss off and not give a damn.

I mean really, headcasting!!!. What a stupid feature to waste so much time on. Not only must both sides have a G550 for it to work, but they wasted a precious T&L unit on it. Sure it is a neat hack, but that is all it is.

Matrox management has a LOT of growing up to do, even compared to Nvidia management. Nvidia may go around abusing resellers for selling Kyro cards, but at least they know what the hell they are doing in the technology department.

        Damn I am so disappointed.

(this isn't meant to be a flame to you rags, but a serious flame at the management living within matrox, sorry if i got carried away here)

        </font>

I know you aren't flaming me, but sitting here and whining isn't doing any good. Matrox has their mind made up for this "refresher" card, and not all the bitching in the world is going to make them go back to the drawing board on it and make it into a gaming card. Matrox is sticking with it's bread and butter, and time will tell if it's the right decision for them. I don't understand how someone could be pissed over a card that gets released. I mean if you are so hard up for a gaming card, there are other brands out there.

I know that this card will really interest those users who were currently looking at the Geforce2 MX.</font>

hmm... that card you describe... sounds a lot like the card matrox introduced 2 years ago.. it was called the G400.

anyone thinking about "upgrading" from a g400 to a g550 is wasting their money because the resultant performance(gaming, and OTHER uses), will be so small, you wouldnt even know the differenc(dont ask me to prove it, just watch and see when the reviews start emerging from sites in the next couple weeks). going from a g400max to a g550 sounds like a downgrade, not an upgrade.

guys, we got all excited about nothing. for all intents and purposes, the "g550" is basically a "g450 pro" with extra software. Matrox, however, chooses to update their cards annually, or bi-anually, where as Nvidia comes out with "pro" or "ultra" cards every 6 months..

Oh, and Rags, yup, im sure they are working on something else, or else all those "400" engineers would be out of work. At the rate of what products they have already announced though, their next card that actually does something, rather than just sit their and look pretty, probably wont be announced, let alone released, for another year and a half. Their card will be... 200 percent faster than my G400Max, and will be the fastest card Matrox has ever made... ... and will compete with Nvidia's and PowerVR and ATI's super-lowend models.... eg. Geforce4MX, Kyro III, Radeon 2LE, etc, or would probably be closer to a Geforce3MX in performance but will cost 3 times as much.

          ...im very dissapointed...

If this card is slower in 3D than a G400MAX I think it is very sad (for me). It would make no sense for me to upgrade to this card if it is slower than a MAX. Notwithstanding that it cost half of what the MAX cost when it came out, times have changed a bit. I ignore the headcasting bit, that is irrelevant to me as it requires a G550 on either end. This is a very specialised application and I don't foresee them selling a lot of cards because of that feature. Then again I do believe that most of us in the forums care for Matrox more than Matrox seems to care for us. It is now clear to me that as has been said Matrox does not care about the gamer's market, as it is not a large enough market to warrant spending a little more money to make a better interim product. So they decide to make 2 low performing graphics cards (3D wise), the fact that they can make it cheaper and thus sell it cheaper (and sell many more to OEMs) is more important than making it better but a bit more expensive and have Matrox lovers buy it, as this is a smaller market. If this card has less than MAX performance I will not buy it, choosing instead to coerce a friend of mine that he needs a GF3, and take his MAX off him for $150 or so, ensuring of course that I hide from him if he starts to complain about 2D quality

rags, have you ever known someone that you know can do so much better at something, yet they dont, and you see them waddling along in mediocrity when you know they could be so much better? Have you ever gotten frustrated when you go somewhere to purchase something and then find out the product was thrown together half-assed?

i think thats the feeling that a lot of us feel and thats why we are whining.

i honestly see no point in this card, and if gateway starts offering it, i cannot, with good concience, offer it to my customers when there are so many better options out there.

I will eventually get over it. I know that whining will not change things. But I do know that whining about it does make me feel better :-)

And the only reason why matrox got a bread and butter market was that they were the best 3-4 years ago. Neglect that and they will most definately loose it. Matrox has been in business for 25 years. THEY should know this.

I am pissed because matrox takes us for fools. They release products with no improvements over previous products and then try to sell them to us with stupid gimics (headcasting). I just received an email from the matrox newsletter annoucing the new G550, and ALL it talked about was headcasting. Futhurmore, they will not fix OpenGL (for my G400), they will not fix their expensive video capture equipment under windows 2000, they have broken promises to support RR for all Gxxx cards, and there probably won't be anymore support for the G400 now they released the G550, leaving almost every here out in the cold (the last one is a guess given the state of affairs with G200 support after G450 was released).

It stinks, and I am not waiting for matrox to change anymore.

i've just read all the previews and i have to say i am a bit dissapointed. if you look at toms preview and see how much money matrox are making ($690 mil), and the fact that they have 400 engineers, and all they managed to come up with was a refreshed g200/400/450 then it just tells me that the whole of matrox are greedy money grabbers who can't be bothered to put their money to better use

A man!! The card is not REALESE!
we've only got some number to talk....

The G550 Was not shit! And ther's nothing to piss off...

just be patient and we will see the benchmark!
Anyway, everybody knows that g550 will not hit the gamer market at all... and now everybody complain about this....

personally I will probably buy a 550 for it's improved dual head and image quality. I don't really cares about HeadCasting but I don't put it to garbage.

an i really really really don't care about this stupid geforce and it's fps.... and Radeon VE is crappy board...

Now it's time to be mature and quit the wonderful world of dream!

I dont think Matrox have spent the last 2 years with 400 engineers sitting around scratching their butts. Most of their engineers work on things other than latest G series graphics cards.

Reading between the lines of several sources Matrox's previous project, the G800 would have similar speccs to a GTS2 but was probably canned when they realised they would be facing the Geforce 3. The G550 is a cutdown version of this. Think about it. It has the potential to be more than a g450+ and has deliberately crippled so that they could price it in the lower end of the market. Whatever you think and feel about Matrox, their next release sometime in 2002 will almost certainly be the dogs doodahs. Remember NVidia are not the only company with top notch engineers (they just have most of them)

I agree again . I think a premim price Matrox Dual Head Card with full DX9 Hardware acc. will be in development by another R&D team at Matrox for release in 2002. After all, it surely couldn't of taken 400 enginneers to develop the G550 could it??? Especially when most of the new technology seems to be software based.

Ok I am also tired of the speculating and whining on m,y part :-0)

I do just want to say that two years in developement, based on the SAME technology, nothing innovative.does not sit well with buyers......It's like a car i guess.......it just will not hit broad reception.........but it will pay the bills......so if another company comes don in price with better options....who will win.........

I gotta tell you......I am all for taking chances in that price range.......but this release is not of enough interest to upgrade.
I just want to buy what is not outdated a month from now

                                sirhardi (et al),
Then it should be obvious that this isn't a card marketed towards you. They have it set on their target market and for you to claim it doesn't interest others is utter blasphemy. Also, they have not been wasting their time and to think so is yet again another major DOH!

You act like a spoiled child that was promised some grand illusion and now that they've taken it away your whining insitently. I'm with Rags on this one.

Just wait for the benchmarks, if you do not appreciate, then get something else. It's really that simple.
