Matrox are simply out of the consumer market. It means matrox has nothing to offer to most of us.

Like I said before, BeOS had a "focus change" that led to their death and killed the majority of the community. Is matrox next ?

I think Matrox Graphics may die as far as the end consumer like ourselves is concerned but survive as a company by simply stripping down to the bone and supplying specialist graphics hardware to niche markets. That niche would be the financial sector that buy up the multhead G200 MMS boards by the bucket load, they have traditionally done well in that market and can sell old, solid technology at a premium price. Mind you that is probably what they thought a couple of years back when they thought they could survive simply on the strength of their OEM deals.

If Matrox are to survive they have got to get some sort of focus, they simply haven't had any in recent years and that is why they are in the position they are in now. They cannot survive in the general consumer market without new products, and by new I mean next gen not rehashed versions of old hardware. People are screaming out for high quality hardware and we know that is something Matrox can produce if they put their minds to it and focus on what they are doing instead of being sidetracked into pumping money into crazy gimicks (HeadCasting) and cutting corners on hardware development (G550/G800).

Well , that's too bad , but their video department is doing well , if i'm not mistaken , i guess there's not a lot of money to be done with people who would sacrifice 2d quality for some extra framerates ..

but i know there's something coming that'll please multiple markets , kinda like what nvidia did with the geforce 3/2 - Quadro thing ...

        actually , i hope ...

Perhaps another angle to look at this is all the models hidden in the driver set that we never saw materizle like the fuzin etc.. Perhaps the exdous of people from Matrox to Nvidia did alot more damage then anyone is letting out and those products where shit canned to do the lack of people to develoup them and the possiblities of Matrox's techongies getting out and being used in compdetors products.

The G550 is a very odd bird in reguards into what it used...a TnL unit that can't be used by DX and its cripped 64 bit memory and the weirdest of all...it getting reported as a G800 by powerstrip!

I'm sure that theres some other resons why Matrox hasn't had a new generation card in ages...and some of these isssues have been reflected on this board (if you seen the Dan Woods threads..well you get the drift)...but the rumours that I've been hearing are any where close to being true about the new card well everyone will be very happy around here as long as Matrox doesnt do a ATI with the Drivers ala OpenGL.

As in Ants posting...he got a rumor stating that the new card will start at $300 for a 32mb Verison...and all the way up to $1200 for a 256mb Verison! With those prices..well I'm expecting something that uses something revelutionary accounting for the high costs of the new product. Theres also rumors that the card is 3x times fast then whats out the market now...though if the card doesnt get here till spring/summer that 3X might be the same speed as whats out on the market then.

If we dont hear anything from Matrox by the end of the Spring..well I guess we can start putting the nails in the Coffin of Matrox Consumter Graphics Division...unfortnaitly.

Even if Matrox bring out a GF3 Ti speed part in the next few months, I'd certainly buy it. I'm strongly thinking about a Ti500 at the moment, but there's always been the back of my mind thought about a next-gen Matrox product.

            Maybe next month...

            ...or the next...

              Next gen. MGA

Well, my opinion is that if we dont hear anything before summer (July/August) then we can start puting nails in the cofin og Matrox Graphics for customers.

If you look in the NEWEST BIOS, and the NEWEST beta release of the MGA drivers, whitch eneries can you find? And how can i check this?

Im still hoping for a gameing card/high end card from Matrox, but i was at a LAN party yesterday, and my G400MAX didn't preform so bad, used mostly 800x600 in 3D games, but in 2D games.... It kickes *****

In Matrox's "Event calendar" they are going to Game Developer Conferance (March 19-23, 2002) and E3 (Electronic Entertaiment Expo) (May 22-24, 2002) why would they go here if they don't have anything for gaming in their minds, because this is tradeshovs where games are central

Well, Matrox seems to be leaving the consumer market and going into more specialized stuff, like medical, such as their MED2mp board.

My guess it they're going to release a 5mp board also (2048x2560) if they're going to try to get into medical display stuff. The problem is, they're too late trying to get in this market, since its going to digital high-res flat panels.

I'm not exaxctly sure what else Matrox is trying to do, but from what I've see and heard in the field they're basically using their existing products and designs and just rehashing it and calling it new, and that doesn't work for long. They're losing OEM contracts on their graphics boards, which is where the money is.

Well, I tend to agree with people here that are saying Matrox is pulling out of the consumer market. The fact that they are not showing financial information, seems a natural reflex to me : if it is good, people will say "that much money, and still no new products"; if it seems bad, people will think it'll go out of business. So if you're not forced by law, why show it ?

The professional market is in some aspects more interesting : A friend of mine has seen the presentation of 3D Studio Max R3 in Brussels, and he noticed that all the high-end workstations used there, have Matrox boards in them, purely for 2D purposes. They had other seperate boards (other manufacturers, quite expensive toys ) to aid both the rendering for the scene as well as rendering for the user interface. But as those guys have the ability to choose top equipment, it would seem to me that Matrox is (at the time of that release) at the top of 2D.

I'm (as a regular consumer) still waiting for Matrox to release new gfx cards, but if I don't see anything by July, I will have to look out for some other make... It is too bad, I really like the Matrox 2D quality, and their driver support (if you see what the competion does for driversupport ); perhaps I'd opt for a system with 2 videocards (one for working in Windows, one for gaming; time will tell)...
