    DirectX8 was released before GeForce3.

well, the matrox g400 was released before dierectx7, and afaik it was a dx7 card.

        No, it wasn't. G400 was a DirectX6.1 card.
DX7 has got Transforms and Lighting (TnL) support and the first card which had this feature was the NVIDIA GeForce DDR.

hmm! by that definition, then the kyro2 would be a dx6.2 card too, I believe embm was a part of dx6.2, IIRC.
Is T&L the deciding factor, when it comes to what directx version the card was designed for?

There is not DirectX6.2. EMBM is the part of DirectX' from the version 6.1. One of the difference between DX6 and DX6.1 was that DX6.1 supports EMBM.

No, IMHO your video card has to support the key features of certain DirectX release to say that your video card is compliant with that DirectX. Because one of the most important new feautre of DirectX7 was TnL support, this is why your video card has to have TnL support to say that your card is a DirectX7 compliant hardware...
