  • Target group 3D/Cad people?

    Me: One of the new things you wana introduce this time is Displacement mapping, right..?
    But that is a DirectX9 feature, so it will not be used in a while...
    Haig: If both of what you say is true, then I think the 3D/Cad people would jump on that faster than the gaming community.

    Maby they are targeting 3D/Cad people to start with...
    Thats why 3Dlabs was in a hurry to get there specs out...

    Then later in the year it will get a gaming and all round card like Creative will try to do with P10... maby.

    Nope.

      what if they found a way to compress existing ordinary geometry into displacement maps at runtime? no need for support in games, all done automatically.

      perhaps thats what the "solution-to-bandwith-problem"-rumors refers to, just a thought.
      This sig is a shameless atempt to make my post look bigger.

          No no no. that's not what I said. Read your Q and my A carefully.

            Ok, he sait :
            1.) One new feature is DM
            2.) DX9 will show up later, so the new features (incl DM) are not usable for a while...

            Here is what I found at OpenGL.ORG or to be more correct 3DLabs.com (opengl.org refers to 3DLabs on OpenGL 2.0)

            ==============================
            Welcome to the OpenGL 2.0 information site.

            Since 3Dlabs embarked on this project, we've received extremely positive feedback - from other OpenGL ARB members, from software developers and from the graphics community at large. The prevailing sentiment is that OpenGL needed to be updated to respond to the trend toward programmable graphics hardware. And there was a good deal of support for taking this opportunity to tune up some other aspects of OpenGL, which has been around for the better part of 10 years.

            Our goals for OpenGL 2.0 are to add support for pixel and fragment shaders, improve memory management and give applications more control over the rendering pipeline. In doing so, we still will provide compatibility with OpenGL 1.3 - so older applications will run on graphics accelerators with OpenGL 2.0 drivers.
            ==============================

            >support for pixel and fragment shaders
            Ok Parhelia has it

            >improved memory management
            Ok,Parhelia has it

            >give apps control over redering pipelines
            Maybe Parhelia allows it - 3DLabs P10 can definitly do it, when I remember their specs right...

            I don't know how long it will take to get OpenGL 2.0 to a final state, but Matrox seems to be prepared and maybe OpenGL 2.0 is available before DX9!
            When will 3DLabs ship their cards???

            On the other side Haig said something with DM capable card, Demo CD, XP, so I think DM is also useable without DX9. Maybe Parhelia does some optimization on it's own....or there are some other features we don't really know...

            I'm still looking forward to Thuesday 14. May!

            3 DVI connections are one to much for one slot...so they must use some extension where all DVI connectors have enough space......

            I hope Matrox will give SciTech Software (http://www.scitechsoft.com) a board and the specs for Parhelia, so SciTech can deliver the OS/2 driver with their SciTech Display Doctor!
            I don't think Matrox want's to develop a new OS/2 driver. The G550 is not officially supported, but the latest driver from Matrox does support the G550 under OS/2.

            Haig any comments on this one?
            Maybe you can send my request to the right department. I don't know if Kendall Bennett (Founder of SciTech Software and head of Dev Team) already knocked at the Matrox hq door.

              If the rumors about better than 8bit per channel color are true then they will take over the video editing and digital effects market on the desktop. People in these areas don't care a whit about quake, they do want 10bit per channel color or better. We've been begging for it for years. Maybe Matrox will be the first to listen.
              The standard for direct to Broadcast and DVD is 10bit 4:2:2 color, currently unobtainable on most Desktop PCs at least an affordable solution. And triple head? That will make a Video Editor and compositing specialists day. Imagine having Premier up in one window, After Effects in another and Photoshop in another seemlessly switching back and forth. Great Scott, I'm getting aroused just thinking about it.
