I look at the use of DM in Win XP as a way to set up a 3D work space. Further, IF it works as I imagine, it would be
possible to rotate the desktop around you; where your are the pivot point. The desktop would also then have zoom
capabilities instead of single magnification steps that are in Powerdesk right now.

I think BEOS was working on something similar.
I forget what it was called.

Bottom photo over in the other thread: photoshop in winxp

This is XP. OK, we can't see much else than the photoshop window, but other than triple head, can't really see much new there. No DM that's for sure.

Still don't really see what Haig's getting at.

I think they found a way to compress normal 3d-geometry into D-maps at runtime, and implemented it at the hardware-level. thats the solution to the bandwith-problem. the compression ratio would be great, like 20:1 or better. i don´t think he was hinting at a 3d-gui, just that it can be used in older games, without dx9.

for example, they compress a high poly quake3-model into a 6-poly cube, but add a funky D-map, to make him look right.

                    edit: corrected driver-level to hardware-level.

TBD - I like your logic. But then why the need for winXP?

perhaps his point wasn´t that it was for xp only, but that it could work on a normal system, without the need for dx9 or fancy patches.
