    - In "simple" games like Quake III Arena, the Parhelia-512 will definitely lose out to the GeForce4 Ti 4600. By simple we mean games that generally use no more than two textures and are currently bound by fill rate. NVIDIA's drivers are highly optimized (much more so than Matrox's) and in situations where the majority of the Parhelia's execution power is going unused, it will lose out to the Ti 4600. This can change by turning on anisotropic filtering and antialiasing however, where the balance will begin to tilt in favor of the Parhelia.

    - In stressful DX8 games, Matrox expects the Parhelia-512 to take the gold - either performing on par or outperforming the GeForce4 Ti 4600. Once again, as soon as you enable better texture filtering algorithms and antialiasing the Parhelia-512 should begin to seriously separate itself from the Ti 4600. The quad-texturing capabilities of the core as well as the 5-stage pixel shaders will be very handy in games coming out over the next several months.

I was expecting it to be faster than a gf4ti4600 by a good margin

From reading anandtechs article I kinda got the impression he wasn't too impressed with it, from what ive read Im kinda disapointed coz I now have a strong feeling that the ATI and nvidia chip will be better. nvidia CEO said this is gonna be the biggest contribution to gfx industry nvidia have ever made, if matrox came out with a card which could of beaten nvidia's "biggest contribution" it would of been a big old slap in nvidia's face. Don't get me wrong this is a great chip and has some trully super features but is it really worth spending 400-500 knowing that someone else is comin out with a better chip soon

Obviously something better is coming out from other companies. Its inevitable. When nVidia releases the nV 30, there will be a better chip from a competing chip around the corner...

Sure, but that chip will be faster than the current chips, by a big margin. Which the Parhelia apparently is not
Also it will be a long time before games start supporting displacement mapping .

Yes....if your sole purpose is for game playing...rather than playing games but having many other uses.

Don't foreget that the most important features in many a mens opinion around here is not the speed or 3d fetures of the chip, but rather the Triplehead, DVD capabilities, 2D features that make a difference and ofcourse a kind of quality RAMDACs we will probably never see in an Nvidia or ATI based board.

Are those features + the fact that this board will be the fastest around for 6 months make it worth a $500 pricetag, HELL YEA!!!

I think parhelia will be a VERY good all-around chip, it seems to do everything well.

it´s nice that they focus on a broader range of features(as opposed to nvidea, which only focus on 3d), I think parhelia will satisfy my needs for a long time.

renember a card that is only good at 3d, will be surpassed quickly, a card that is good at everything, might be surpassed at 3d quickly, but will still be best at everything else.

and besides, do you really think this card will suck at gaming, just because it doesn´t beat the crap out the nv30...

addmited, you can´t brag about it to the fps-kiddies forever, but i´m pretty sure it will handle future games pretty well.

I am not saying it's a bad chip, and if it is available within one or two months I am sure gonna buy it. What worries me though is that neither Anandtech nor Tom's Hardware did have even an engineering sample, meaning that the wait could be much longer than that.

Ok i should of worded my response better, the nvidia card is gonna be out 2-3 months after the matrox card, the next card from nvidia is gonna be out 6-7 months. If the nvidia card is indeed better than the matrox card I do wonder when Matrox will release a newer card. The R1000 and nv30 will probably be around the same performance wise, there may be a 3rd company whose chip is as good but unfortunately i don't see matrox as that 3rd company I do hope matrox does release a follow up to this card in about 9 months and don't make the same mistake they did with the G400

their NDA for the chip might have exspired, but not for the card, it was a chip anouncement, not a card announcement.

Especially liked the part where they call surround gaming a novelty. Thats the same crap that was said about dualhead at one point. If anything that requires people to try to expand their system comes along, everybody is always putting it down, until everybody else supports it, then it's expected. What crap. Anyways, I'm going to enjoy my triple desktop, since I enjoy novelty's I guess.
A computer is like sex. Your never 100% sure what your doing but when all goes well, it feels REAL good.

I'm not sure they made a mistake with the G400, yes they should have released a faster card after this, but the question is whether they were actually after this market (i suppose they were with the G800/G550)..

I believe he stated in the conclusion that he has no card. Can't be sure, it seems the site is down

i cannot understand how anandtech came to the conclusion already that it wont outperform a G4ORCE 4. its got twice the gut's and other such features, how can it not ?
