  • what name will the card have?

    the chip is called parhelia-512.
but what name will the card have?

the cards and the chips never had the same names.
    for example:
    chip: athena - card: impression
    chip: 2064 - card: millennium
    chip: 1064 - card: mystique
    chip: 2164 - card: millenniumII
    chip: g100 - card: productiva g100
    chip: g400 - card: millennium g400, millennium g400max, marvel g400
    and so on......

so what nave will the card with the parhelia have?

Well, continuing the early tradition, there ought to be different names for the different versions, followed by Parhelia...

But they could do what they did with the G400: keep the name of the chip, and add an extension indicating the version of the card (similar to G400 and G400Max). The other specs of the G400 had do to with the video-capture system (millenium vs. marvel), which is no longer present.
Looking at the naming of the later cards (G450, G550), I'd say they'll be using the chip-name with an extension...

      Guessing at:
      Parhelia (L) 64MB
      Parhelia 128MB
      Parhelia Pro 128MB
      Parhelia Pro 256MB

The last 2 generations saw Millennium precede the chip name, but Parhelia is meant to encompass all that is Matrox - so it'll likely continue into the card name.

Maybe it'll be the Matrox Millennia

...no, I wouldn't like that. Mr. Trottier seems to be very interested in astronomy, so it would not be surprising for me if the name had something to do with that (okay, Parhelia already has).

I think the Millennium name will be dropped. Matrox are touting this as the best thing since the Millennium. Another Millennium could be confusing. New name, new era of professional graphics.

(should I join Matrox PR? )
