  • Other rumors about ATI

So, it seems that the R300 is near to come. Tomorrow, someone says...

And, apart from all, the more interesting things are:
    1) 107 million of transistor (dunno if million is the correct word, so: 107.000.000)
    2) 315 MHz the core clock
    3) >40 W the power comsumption (why do some english words are so nasty to write?)
    4) 0,15 µm

And, to be clear, I don't work for Ati or the like. Those datas were simply into the front page of an Italian news site

    107m transistor + 315mz + 0.15 µm ?
Wouldn't that glow red from heat?

Nah, not likely. Most ASIC designs tend to stay with static logic, which doesn't burn that much power. But the over 40W is a bit ridiculous. I'm not thinking about getting the power in, but rather getting it OUT. That's more than a P3 would usually dissipate. Sounds bogus to me.

I can remember all the trouble 3dfx got into after adding a molex connector to their boards... I hope for ATi's sake the public has changed their minds about power consumption.

          desn't it say ">40W"?

          "Less than" 40 watts? right?

not very specific. might as well say >300W

edit: am I right? i always get these two confused.

You are wrong. It says "more than".

Hope you are not a computer programmer

Sigh ... sad display of our public school system.
Buback ... think of it this way ... ">" means greater than because the left side of the '>' character is larger than the right side ( e.g. 2>1).
              Got it?

How much power do the AGP specs allow a card to draw from the motherboard? (anyone got it off hand? )

ATi... proud to be the first video card manufacturer to take the bold step of including peliter coolers in an advanced display card! Why buy another product that's still using primitive unaugmented cooling when you can join the next generation!

hey don't pick on me because i don't use math everyday.

                    no, i'm not a programer. i'm a historian.
but don't worry, because i'll remember this day and the lesson it's taught me! :-)

and don't get me wrong, i can hold my own once i get back in the saddle. now, where's that math book...

I am wondering, in that table with the radeon series overview you can see that the R200 has 2 texture units per pipe, but the RV200 has 3 texture units per pipe ( RV250 has also 3 Texture units). So changes to the change can be done, maybe Matrox should add some new features or fixes.

As you can see in that review the RV250 is also slower as the ATI 8500 and Ti4200 , not always though, in the pixelshader test its a few percentages faster . And it seems that the 3th texture unit isn't used eather in 3dmark.
The RV250 has 3 texture units but each unit can handle 2 textures, so 6 textures per pass.

I really don't get it why Matrox didn't add a Texture loop back
and why no internal support for 40 bit (10-10-10-10)

The 9700 is faster than I though, but around 40 W is to much!
I think nVidia will be the top, when they release their new chip/card.

Time for Matrox to give the Parhelia a new price tag!
I pushed my order for another 4 weeks.....

Today was my last test....and I failed!
I have to write it again on 4thOctober 2002!
Now I've time to play some games!
I still have Wizardy 8 waiting for me. Last Savegame from 10th Jan. 2002! Ups!

Ok, now back to the topic!
Has someout heard if Matrox thinks about a new price for parhelia?
For 306 EUR one card (bulk) was sold on ebay here in Germany (2002-07-16).
The cheapest store sells Parhelia (bulk) now for 389,- EUR and (retail) is still at 469 EUR!
80 EUR difference....so is it worth to spend that much for additional 20 MHz?
Look at my question in the Benchmark forum....bulk vs retail!
                            Still no answers! :|
