If they manage to sell enough P-LX, they might just be able to do it... in software...

Look at the Xabre. Lots is done in software and the performance is decent. Make enough of them and you can include it all into silicon in a few generations.

They don't need to become number one, but a good 7-8% of the market should do nicely (up from +/- 1%...).

It's weird now, I remember way back when Matrox was in the same position as nVidia and they were dominating the graphics arena. Now, they have +/- 1%...

Hercules! Number Nine, once the big Matrox competitor with their Imagine 128.

Matrox was toutuing Buymp mapping (G400), and the world went with T&L . Matrox went for Multiple monitors, and big pipe-line. other game cards went with mostly just big-pipe-lines. Matrox split between business apps and gaming, and CAD. others went for low end, misddle, and high end gaming.

Business cycle picks up, Matrox needs to be there. it's the core. if it can take other resources in R&D, to keep a foot in the door, maybe it should not mess with gaming for now. So, it is probably doing just that. Waiting til the time is ripe to do it again. Buit not until it has the resources.

If Europe continues it's path to become another version of the USA, but with a socialist leaning. More government and less privatization, Matrox could capture the business market for al of Europe as the businesses would be mostly government contracts.
Matrox can lock in those long government contracts with the whole continent. Just a thought.
