I think it would be a great idea for Matrox to enter into new markets, such as notebooks, gaming consoles, and chipsets.
For notebooks they could use the tried and true GSeries with superior TV-Out and dual display, and they could probably be made to use a lot less power with a die shrink. (Maybe sprinkle a few new features here and there and give it a little speed boost.) S3 has been riding it out like this for a long time, why not Matrox?
Gaming Consoles? How about Parhelia, FAA16x would be great for games. Parhelia won't be so "outclassed" when it comes to that area, I mean XBox is using a GF3.5 and the other systems are arguably lesser in comparison. Maybe talk with SEGA, they just returned to profitability from 5 years of losing cash, and it just seems to me that they would love to return to their roots as a hardware maker. Get a little Matrox sticker on the front of the console, like ATi. People will remember it because Matrox just sounds cool, they see a Matrox box in CompUSA? "Gee this is the same company that made Console X, I want THIS!"
Chipsets? It was rumored they had an integrated video chipset before i810 and it was thrown away. Use experience from that and build on it with Parhelia or P-LX. Again, comparatively, Parhelia would shine there. Integrated triple head? Man that would be great. Maybe put this into use in the notebook area as well. There is a greatly untapped AMD notebook market, I'm sure AMD would want to team up with Matrox.
Ideas like these would probably require a good investment to start out with, but the rewards would be great if they would just give it a try.
