  • 3ghz posting test!

I have a complaint already believe it or not. The case sucks. It pivots open in the back meaning you need to turn it around if you even have room to get into the case. Also, even though it have four serial ATA ports there are only two places for hard drives. Six bays. Two must be hard drives or unused. Two must be CD-ROMs/DVDs/CD-RWs, etc. or unused and two must be floppies or unused. The damn thing uses rails! ****ing rails! It reminds me of my 1995 Compaq CDS 972 pre windows 95 machine. There are only five sets of rails for 6 bays and there are three different ****ing kinds! Vent and now I'm going to have loads of fun test.

    • Coulda gone to support.dell.com for system teardown docs. Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda test.

Aside from the case, how is it? Did you format it yet? I would suggest it, Dell's aren't perfect when you get them. Most new systems I use to get calls on I had to format, back when I did tech support for Dell.

      • It is one hell of a speed demon. WinXP SP2, .Net 1.1 SP1 installed way faster than anything we have at work and we have 4 2.7ghz 256MB machines. That's proably the better hard drive mostly. Shutdown in4 to 7 seconds. It boots in about half a minute. I took off Norton Internet Security for now. It kept pestering me. I'll format it eventually. It works fine now though there are two partitions I cannot get to. One is multiple gigabytes. UT2004 runs with everything turned up at 1024 by 768 by 32bit. I'll have to switch to my old monitor to see if I can push it further all the way to 1600 by 1200. I planned to use the new monitor on my old machine anyway. Even the integrated sound is an improvement over my original SB Live. Hmm, wonder if it supports EAX of any version. I'll eventually get an addon sound card. 8 USB 2.0 ports.

One really good thing about the case design though is that you can open it fully with all the wires still attached. That's how I have it right now in case I needed to. There are so many power connectors to figure out.

I have my previous 80GB PATA data drive running off a Promise Ultra 100 card for right now. I guess an 80GB SATA would replace the 160 as my boot drive and make the 160 my data drive eventually.

I get pissed most everytime I see some new weird case. For instance the floppy cage is about an eighth of an inch less wide than the HD case. I dealt with so many craptacular cases when I did outsourced software testing I tend to get frustrated. One looked like all but the drives and fronty bezel were upside down. With another I had to take five outer pieces off just to get to the expansion card slots. It has a big heaping ducted processor fan. There' no high pitched squeal.
