Nobody takes education seriously any more.

We seem to live in different worlds. I have two "kids", a daughter of 23 who studies at a uni in England and a son of 20 who goes to uni here in Sweden. They take their education most seriously, and that goes for their friends too. Most kids in Sweden get a fair amount of education, even if it´s not necessarily the same stuff I learnt once upon a time.
Being an academic myself I have the good fortune to know quite a lot of middle-aged/elderly people with 9-12 years of elementary schooling (or even less), and mostly they strike me as being very knowledgable, albeit in other areas than myself. I often envy them their knowledge in matters I know little about. There are other kinds of education than academic study. He/she who has spent half a lifetime in his/her profession is presumably very well educated in his/her line of business, but somehyow that doesn´t seem to count as education, which I find rather strange.

Well I've seen pently of people who when to college and not make anything of themselfs. The point I'm making is that someone can be quaified for a job and not have a college degree, so they won't get the job just because of that. Ambition and wllingness to learn aren't the exculsive domain of someone with a college education. I've seen pently of people have that and not have a college education.
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

Sweden and the US/UK are in fact two different worlds education-wise.

The Internet - where men are men, women are men, and teenage girls are FBI agents!

I'm the least you could do
If only life were as easy as you
I'm the least you could do, oh yeah
If only life were as easy as you
        I would still get screwed

I agree.. things are much better for everyone when LCD doesn't hold sway over everyone else by force of law and all trumped-up social taboo.
